This was a hoax and I’ll say the “threatening letter” was a hoax as well. That’s a Captain Obvious, I should think.
We have, in recent history, had a lot of "social unrest" over supposed white-on-black inter-racial incidents. His intent was not harmless. There's not a lotta difference in a harmless or harmful moron when they're on a stage this big. He's playing with big matches inna dry forest.
I'll reserve my opinion, but be damned if I'll minimize what he did. Either way, I ain't holdin my breath for a fool thing to happen to this guy.
I doubt it. Look, I think this should be covered under a blanket civil rights violation.
I don’t care who winds up going after the guy, but I do think he should do some stiff time over it. I’d like the charges ad guilty verdict to indicate the seriousness of what he did.
The whole thing should wind up letting liars know, there’s going to be stiff penalties for this sort of thing from now on.

I get a jury summons almost every year like Christmas cards. One was for Federal Jury Duty on a civil rights violation by a corrupt cop. The Feds were investigating corruption up through the dept into the city manager, city attorney and mayor. They stung the 24 year old officer on hidden cameras, called him before a grand jury, where he lied about his crime. He had no idea he was filmed. They never let on, gave him nine affidavits to fill out about his testimony and told him, “we know you’re busy, just mail them in, one per juror.” He was looking at 50 years in Federal prison. Five for the civil rights violation, and 5 years per 9 counts of mail fraud, stacked. He rolled over on the City officials.

Like others have said, I’m shocked this isn’t augmented with a hate crime.
That's why he's being charged with falsely reporting a crime that never happened, and he's not being charged with fraud ... because he didn't defraud anyone out of any money or property.
Obviously under certain circumstances in Illinois.
All the citizens who live in that neighborhood should sue Smollett, as well as all media outlets who spread these false rumors of hate crime perpetrators at large in their community, causing them irreparable fear, pain, suffering and emotional distress.
