Honda has confirmed it will close its Swindon car plant in 2021, with the loss of about 3,500 jobs.
The Japanese company builds 150,000 Honda Civics in Swindon a year, of which some 90% were exported to the EU.
The decision comes just weeks after Nissan switched plans to build its X-Trail SUV from the UK to Japan.
Car manufacturers have said they are concerned about continued uncertainty surrounding the UK's post-Brexit relationship with the EU. The industry has also been hit by falling demand in China and a slowdown in diesel sales.
And a new EU-Japan trade deal will see the EU reducing the 10% duties on Japanese car imports to zero by 2027, meaning there is less need for Japanese manufacturers to have a base in the EU.

The muzzies are not production minded, don’t want to work and take too much time off for prayer .... in between times of scaring everybody around them.
Surprised to read that Honda builds cars in the UK . Brits are not known for meticulous workmanship ...
“Brits are not known for meticulous workmanship ...”
Nor known for their dentistry, hair care, or cooking. They are well known for their undeserved sense of self-importance, extreme haughtiness and pomposity.

There is a lot in play here. Japan has a demographically caused labor shortage. To deal with this and to maintain political influence they have moved their more labor intensive jobs to countries where they need to maintain some political influence. If I recall, the four biggest Japanese car manufacturing plants are in the US. I suspect that Britain is not considered of as great importance to the Japanese interests so they will invest their capital elsewhere. Also there is a great deal of trade uncertainty. The EU has threatened trade sanctions on Britain which would greatly impact the car export business. Companies crave certainty so they don’t waste huge sums on a gamble.
As for electric cars; they don’t make sense. You can fill up a gas car in three minutes for a 400 mile trip. It takes up to five hours to fill an electric car for a shorter trip. There is probably a place for electric cars but they aren’t for the average person.
Not just from the Beeb...
Q for Honda: What need to make electric vehicles?!
Brexit is like ‘Global Warming’. It’s the political cause-du-jour. Sooner or later one or the other gets identified as an underlying cause.
Usual lies from the BBC
?? The only statement to that effect which I can see in the report is a direct quote from the Nissan Europe Chairman, the authenticity of which is not in doubt:
"the continued uncertainty around the UK's future relationship with the EU is not helping companies like ours to plan for the future".
But I see the following in the analysis by the BBC Business Editor which follows the report:
"Brexit issues may be lurking in the background, but Honda's real reasons for closing Swindon are about the future of the global car industry, not Britain's future relationship with Europe."
Plenty of good reasons for criticising the BBC without needing to invent them.
Toyota, Nissan and Honda, which have all had successful large factories in the UK for decades, clearly thought otherwise.
I learned here that the Brit Civic was a hatchback. I would suggest that Honda is discontinuing the Civic Hatchback altogether
The truth is that the Japanese Big 3 are not big players in the UK or Europe, they are considered elderly peoples cars. Kia and Hyundai have bigger market shares over there than the Japanese brands.
Electric vehicles make sense for Europe, where the weather is milder and the distances much shorter.

We have a Civic 5 door in the US as well:

Another “I stubbed my toe today and it was because of Brexit” article.
Trump needs to intervene in the EU-UK Brexit talks.
Trump needs to pressure the EU into making a more favorable deal with the UK, or see U.S. trade rules regarding the EU become less favorable to the EU, and all U.S. tariffs with the U.K. set to zero.
That must mean me, then. Though my company car (when I definitely didn’t fall into that category) was a British-made Nissan.
The Dutch government has said it is in talks with more than 250 companies about moving their operations from the UK to the Netherlands before Brexit.
The economic affairs ministry said it had lured 42 companies or branch offices and 1,923 jobs from the UK last year, as it increases its efforts to gain Brexit business.
Among those who have chosen to invest in the Netherlands are the Discovery Channel, Sony and Bloomberg.
