~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Camp Mabry, Texas

mabry2

Camp Mabry is a military installation in Austin, Texas that houses the headquarters of the Texas Military Forces and the Texas Military Forces Museum. Established in 1892, Camp Mabry is the third-oldest active military installation in Texas, behind Fort Sam Houston and Fort Bliss. It was named for Brigadier General Woodford H. Mabry, the Adjutant General of Texas when the camp was founded. The camp was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The facility has served a variety of military purposes since its establishment. It was used as a mobilization area during the Spanish–American War, as headquarters for the Texas Defense Guard during World War II, and as a training facility for the Texas DPS and the Texas Rangers until 1953.

It has also hosted the Texas National Guard's State Officer Candidate School since 1959. Camp Mabry currently hosts other branches of the Reserve components of the United States Armed Forces from the United States Army Reserve, the United States Navy Reserve Navy Operations Support Center (NOSC Austin) and the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Other facilities include the 136th Regional Training Institute, state Combined Support Maintenance Shops, the armory of the 36th Infantry Division headquarters, a clinic, a parachute packing and storage facility, and additional storage buildings. In 1992 the Texas Military Forces Museum opened on the site.

Prior to the September 11th attacks, Camp Mabry's mile-long track that sits adjacent to Mopac was a popular destination for walkers and joggers, and the field within it was used by many youth sports teams. The track and field are still available for public use, though adult visitors must present a state or federal ID at the gate.

Howdy, LUV.

Hope you had a good day. Has the wind let up yet or are you still choking on dust?

Here’s an interesting video about the Boneyard in Arizona:

Hi, radu!

No dust but the wind is just strong enough to make the 31 degree temp feel like 21. Pretty cold!

Thanks for posting the link to this video about the Boneyard in AZ.
Man, how cool it would be to wander among all that history. It’s sad to know some of those planes will be gone forever one of these days.

BRRRRRRRR! Sounds miserably cold.
I haven’t stepped outside tonight so don’t know if the wind’s still blowing here or not. It sure made it tough to leave the house this afternoon, that’s for sure.

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

I hope you had a nicer day than we did so you could enjoy time at the lake. It was cold and windy here but at least it was dry. Our last dry day for at least a week. *sigh*

Any more distractions to make Gizmo take off yesterday. :-)

((LOL))Well, he chased some birds out at the park yesterday but at least he came back to me. We had a great time out there.

We're under a Winter Weather Advisory today so we'll see what happens. Most likely we'll be sleeping in today.

It is getting colder and “feels like” 17 degrees right now with 15mph breeze blowing.

I’m going to head out. See ya tomorrow night...maybe...for the quiz!

Nice that he went back to you when you called instead of making you chase him down.

So y’all are in for some rough weather, too, huh? We’re under a flood watch, if not warning, over the next three days.

We’ve been at 32 for a little while and since it’s cloudy, we might not drop much more. I stepped outside a little while ago and there was just a hint of a breeze but the upper winds must be whipped up. High thin clouds were flying past the moon.
The rain is getting close to us, coming up from the south. Guess that glimpse of the moon is the last I’ll get for a while.

Sleep well. I hope it warms up a bit tomorrow .... and the wind dies down!

At one point up until the mid 70’s (I think) the 143rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne) still used where the running track is now as their drop zone.

I can only imagine what it was like driving down MoPac and seeing that on a Saturday!

Yep, it's kind of cold here.
32°...but no wind, so not awful.
Last night with 15mph wind
...it was frigid!
How is it where you are?
I think some of you are gonna get more snow.
I know you're soooo excited!
Anyhooooo....🦉....y'all have a Terrific Tuesday!
And stay warm and safe out there!
((((hugs))))
