Virginia delegate plans to introduce articles of impeachment unless Fairfax resigns

Virginia House of Delegates Member Patrick Hope (D) announced Friday he intends to introduce articles of impeachment for Justin Fairfax unless the Democratic lieutenant governor resigns by Monday following new allegations of sexual assault.

“On Monday, I will be introducing articles of impeachment for Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax if he has not resigned before then,” Hope tweeted.

Hope issued the declaration hours after a second woman came forward on Friday to publicly accuse Fairfax of sexual assault.

A lawyer for Meredith Watson released a statement saying Fairfax raped her in 2000 when they were both students at Duke University, adding that the alleged attack was “premeditated and aggressive.”

Vanessa Tyson was the first woman to accuse Fairfax of misconduct earlier this week, saying the lieutenant governor sexually assaulted her in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

“What began as consensual kissing quickly turned into a sexual assault,” Tyson, a college professor from California, said in a statement Wednesday. “Mr. Fairfax forced me to perform oral sex on him.”

Fairfax has denied both allegations. He issued a statement Friday claiming they were part of “a vicious and coordinated smear campaign” and vowing, “I will not resign.”

Watson’s allegations have opened the floodgate to a host of calls for the lieutenant governor’s ouster from members of his own party.

"We believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson. We found her account compelling and highly credible. The central issue at the heart of her account is consent, and there can be no better authority to decide whether it was given than Dr. Tyson herself," several Virginia Democratic lawmakers said in a statement Friday night.

"Meredith Watson's statement describes another extremely disturbing incident, which lends further credence to Dr. Tyson's story,” Virginia Democratic Reps. Don Beyer, Abigail Spanberger, Elaine Luria, Jennifer Wexton and Gerry Connolly added in the joint statement.

“Given recent developments, I believe that it is best for the Commonwealth of Virginia if Justin Fairfax dealt with these accusations as a private citizen. He can no longer serve us as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia,” Rep. Donald McEachin (D-Va.) tweeted.

The scandal surrounding Fairfax comes as another embroils Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) and Attorney General Mark Herring (D) over their past use of blackface.

“Folks probably aren’t going to like this, but... innocent until proven guilty. Even democrats.”

I agree. I hope these aren’t bogus accusations.

..... then Northum appoints a new Dem-approved LT Gov, then resigns to a cushy 7-figure lobbyists job, new Lt becomes Gov.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No - Lt Gov doesn’t work that way. Here is how it works (link at bottom - article written by Ken Cuccinelli, former Atty General of the State of VA):

If the Lieutenant Governor were elevated to the Governorship or if he resigned — now a genuine possibility — then the current President Pro Tem of the State Senate “assumes the duties” of the lieutenant governor. Note that the President Pro Tem does not assume the office of LG. It is a subtle difference, but the office of lieutenant governor would be left open until the next statewide election in 2021.

The current President Pro Tem of the Virginia Senate is Senator Steve Newman of the Lynchburg area. Steve is a Republican — a mild-mannered conservative who is well-liked on both sides of the aisle.

Interestingly, Steve would NOT have to give up his Senate seat as he assumed the duties of the LG. That means that he would get his vote as a state senator, and he would also get to vote to break any ties that arise in the chamber.

It is worth noting that the entire General Assembly is up for election this year and the state senate is currently 21-19 in favor of the Republicans. If the Democrats take control, they can elect their own President Pro Tem of the Senate, who would then have his/her own senate vote and also be able to break ties.

BTW, didn’t the “democracy-dies-in-the-darkness” WashPost thoroughly investigate the sexual-assault allegations against Fairfax “FOR MONTHS”? Before concluding there was nothing there, so they spiked the story??

Guess they didn’t want to look that closely. Plus, the accused was a Democrat, another reason to bury the story.

A black Virginia congressman is calling for him to resign. He’s the only one I know of.

But using DUmmie logic, if all of President Trump’s judicial appointments should be voided because he’s tainted, how can they justify the Governor appointing his own successor?

Patrick Hope is a white man. The Democrats are showing a double standard. Hope is willing to believe a rape accusation against a black politician, but the Democrats ignored the rape accusations against Bill Clinton.

Not so if based on democrapper caterwalling feigned outrage.

Hard to determine. One is physical aggression one is symbolic (I guess) of great injustice generations ago.

They can all take a flippin leap up my horses arse.

Well I for one, believe her. Women almost always tell the truth about sexual assault... Unless of course they are angry,
ambitious,
jealous,
jilted,
scorned,
see a lesser woman with the man they wanted,
see a chance to advance a career,
see a chance to get some money,
see a chance to get some fame and attention,
are just crazy,
are angry at someone else,
want to gain the attention of some other man,
are a drunk,
feel guilty,
got religion and feel guilty,
their cat died,
get pregnant by a man other than their husband,
etc.
But other than these few circumstances, if a woman says something happened, you can take it to the bank!

Yup and the Black man, who the Dems want to help so much, until they are no longer useful to them, becomes the fall guy — taking attention, heat and focus off the two racist white guys. Such hypocrites.

I don’t know, man. A travel agent was booking her a flight and asked if she wanted to sit in gumming or non-gumming.

If Fairfax gets the boot and Northam and Herring stay, black voters are going to be pissed off...

and some of them will stay home come Nov 2019.

I said all along, if Northam isnt the guy in the picture, he shouldnt resign. You dont resign over something you didnt do. You dont have tofall on a sword for something you didnt do. His response has been less than absolute he didnt do it.

Id remember 100% if I did that.
