Climate change may increase congenital heart defects
Science Daily ^ | January 30, 2019 | by The American Heart Association

Rising temperatures stemming from global climate change may increase the number of infants born with congenital heart defects (CHD) in the United States over the next two decades and may result in as many as 7,000 additional cases over an 11 year-period, according to new research in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

"Our results highlight the dramatic ways in which climate change can affect human health and suggest that pediatric heart disease stemming from structural heart malformations may become an important consequence of rising temperatures," said the leading author Wangjian Zhang, M.D..

While previous research has found a link between maternal heat exposure and the risk for heart defects in the offspring, the precise mechanisms remain unclear.

The estimates in the current study are based on projections of the number of births between 2025 and 2035 in the United States and the anticipated rise in average maternal heat exposure across different regions as a result of global climate change.

In their analysis, the researchers used climate change forecasts obtained from NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. They improved the spatial and temporal resolutions of the forecasts, simulated changes in daily maximum temperatures by geographic region and then calculated the anticipated maternal heat exposure per region for spring and summer.

To obtain a parameter for congenital heart defect (CHD) burden projections, the investigators used data from an earlier study, also led by Lin, which gauged the risk of congenital heart defects based on maternal heat exposure for births occurring between 1997 and 2007. The researchers then integrated the heat-CHD associations identified during the baseline period with the projected increases in maternal heat exposure over a period between 2025 and 2035 to estimate the potential changes in CHD burden.

Holy moley. Is today global warming day? There have been a number of stories here, about how global warming is causing various problems in the world..........

I’m pretty sure that congenital heart disease is caused by the promiscuity of Lesothian teenage girls.

It isn’t complicated. If your research identifies global warming as a possible cause of something bad, you get more grant money. Thus is science corrupted by politics.

Do kids born in Panama have more congenital heart problems than kids in Finland?

Were I a comedian, I think I would put together a stand-up bit about all the nutty stuff that global warming allegedly causes. . . maybe that’s why I’m not a stand-up comic.

Well, if Doctor Wang Jang said it, that’s good enough for me.

“May cause”

May is the month before June, Doc.

One has to wonder...WTF?

Especially in the light of the fact that global aggregate temperatures are falling...not rising.

Climate change, if it exists, is an effect, not a cause, and cannot cause anything. Words have meanings.

Betting they blame athletes foot on “climate change.”

Same old formula applied to all pseudoscientific articles related to “climate change”

where X is randomly selected phenomenon

If (x == bad) {find way to associated it to climate change}
else if (x == good) {find way to show it will decline due to climate change}
else {ignore it}

I’m pretty sure climate change has caused a tremendous increase in the outbreak of hemorrhoids.... oh wait. That is actually caused by global warming.

I’m surprised they didn’t run with E.D. That would have generated more concern.

That would be a fun comedy routine, to make note of all the disasters which are allegedly caused by global warming.

Maybe some independent comedy club, such as those who do open mike nights, would allow for such a comedy routine. We will never see such comedy allowed on Comedy Central or shows such as Jimmy Kimmel.

That’s what Oldeconomybuyer does. It appears to be a hobby. I presume he buys into it, because of his obsession with scouring the web and finding sky-is-falling articles, but I can’t say for sure.

Paraphrase: the heart researchers got climate forecasts from NASA and Goddard and ignored them. They invented data for hypothetical temperature increases in places where women live. Then they modeled maternal/fetal health outcomes based on speculative modeling of temperature affects on pregnant women.

Here another study I did just now on the fly: I got data from NASA, then threw it out. I used a model which holds that pregnant women exposed to 1000 deg F. temperatures for over 10 hours will die, along with their babies. I ran the model, assuming global temperature rise to 1060 deg F. My model output shows that women and babies die at 100% levels.

Send me grant money.

Well, the Democrats have the perfect solution for little boys and girls with birth defects - kill ‘em all.
