French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday human rights in Egypt were perceived as worse now than under former strongman Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled by protests in 2011.
His comments marked a hardening after he said in 2017 he would not lecture President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi over civil liberties, which activists say are being eroded.
I think current policies are perceived by intellectuals and Egypts civil society as tougher than under the Mubarak regime, Macron told reporters on the sidelines of a trip to Egypt. [ ]
Non-governmental organizations are pressuring Macron to be firm with the Egyptian president, who in April secured a second term, shoring up his position as a power-broker in the region.

Who else could these “intellectuals” be?
Tais-toi !
Macron is no one to talk about human rights violations.
In the land of terrorists, IEDs, and a hair trigger jihad only moments away, you can’t hold the leaders of those nations to the same standards we have.
It would be nice, but get real.
We in the Western World expect them to all be touchy feely people. It’s not happening folks.
Leaders keep a tight ship. If they didn’t they’d be searching around for their head in the dark.
Macaroney can’t even manage his own nation, yet he pops off about other nations as if he was God’s gift to leadership.
Nope.
Macron, STHU
The from the guy who has police attacking ordinary French citizens who are protesting. Clean your own house Macron
Macron is getting pushed by his growing number of Muslim constituents. You can bet that France and the rest of Europe will become more and more anti-Israel as it is colonized by the Muslim world.
General Sisi is anti MB and radical Islam. His enemies want another Arab Spring.
How’s France rates nowadays?
Macron is trying to finish the job of installing the Muslim Brotherhood, that Obama started and failed at.
I thought about what it would be like to rule Iraq when Sadaam Hussein was in charge.
Because of the vicious factions there and the different agendas, you wouldn't last a month without being assassinated, unless you were more violent and punishing than those factions.
You would have to be able to kill suspected assassins and their mothers fathers brothers and sisters and the assasin's sons and daughters to get the message across that even a failed suicide assassination is going to have consequences. - Tom
I think that’s a reasoned take. Then there’s the gassing of his people, and his sons taking married women and killing their husbands. And we haven’t gotten to the mass grave part yet.
Hussein was a despicable man. I don’t think there’s getting around that.
His people weren’t thrilled about him being gone for no cause.
I wouldnt have thought that Macron could come out with a statement so stupid that it would make his previous pronouncements seem arguably rational. But he has topped himself yet again.
..................
Macron made a headline on a topic other than safety vests.
Al Sisi rescued Egypt from the abyss of the Mo Bros and is doing what he can to keep the Christians from slaughter. Euros and the Obamas hate him for it.
Been there a few times, fascinating place. Sisi saved Egypt from descending into a Muslim Brotherhood hell under Morsi. Kept good relations with Israel, which is critical because the Arabs can’t make war against Israel without Egyptian manpower. But actually, Israel’s relations with several other Arab states has improved markedly, esp. with the Gulf states.
Macron can’t run his on country. Some nerve!
