The District of Columbia is a COUNTY, and not even a very big county, at that. If there is a move to create a STATE, let it be carved out of parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, the so-called “collar counties” that surround the District, so the state would be of a decent size and with SOME diversity within its boundaries.

Then move the national capital of the United States to a location along the Mississippi River, between Missouri and Illinois, which is much closer to the geographic center of the US.

Either that, or reduce the designated are of the District of Columbia to include only the White House at one end of Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol Building at the other, with a gerrymander to include the Supreme Court, and let the remainder of the territory revert to the custody of Maryland, which would accept it as an additional county, then the people of the former District of Columbia would have direct voting representation in the Congress, and representation in the Senate through Maryland.

Yes, isn’t the 51st state reserved for Alberta?

“D.C.’s land came from Maryland and Virginia?
Originally, but the Virginia portion was “retroceded” (returned to Virginia) in 1846.”

As they could now do with the Maryland segment back to Maryland, save for the Federal enclave.

“You can’t Constitutionally subdivide states. D.C.’s land came from Maryland and Virginia?”

You might want to talk to West Virginia about that.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton has introduced a bill to make the District the 51st state.

It makes more sense to shrink DC to be 1 mile by 1 mile, and Maryland taking over the jurisdiction of the DC suburbs.

The State of Virginia has already taken a chunk of the original DC area, that is no longer 10 miles square.

There is no justification to create another state.

Its first purpose was to establish a permanent seat of government. Congress under the Articles of Confederation was a vagabond institution.

Repeal the 23rd!!!!!!!

I’m surprised rats didn’t take up DC Statehood when they had full control and 60 in the Senate in 2009. They WILL the next time they do (if we allow such horror to come to pass). They want those 2 free Senate seats like Michael Moore wants a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup every hour of the day. They’d reduce “DC” to a small area around the White House and Capitol, that would STILL get 3 (extra) electoral votes (determined by the homeless people they’d let live in the Capitol basement) because of the stupid 23rd amendment.

Has to be a Constitutional Amendment, needs 291 votes.

Much better to repeal XXIII, whereby Congress awarded itself 3 electoral votes in 1960 and somehow 38 states went along.

EH Norton, the black woman with the lice cut hair, pretends to be relevant by advocating the establishment of a Negro state.

When she dies, she will not be replaced. She is a tit on a boar hog

This is what I see too Sir. Watched this agenda start in Ca over 35 years ago and just knew it was going to eventually spread to the national level at some point. And now here we are, if our Constitutional Republic was ever in serious jeopardy it is right now.

Even if they do not get these through during this congress, I fear they just might the next time they get control.

These socialists remind me of a rooster we had when I was a kid on the ranch. When this rooster started to come of age he had decided he had a bone to pick with a knothole in the plywood wall on the outside of the coup.

For 5 years in a row he spent everyday all day long attacking and fighting a useless battle with this one knothole on the wall. Most ignorant rooster I ever saw and he eventually broke his own neck fighting with this knothole.

But in the meantime he had succeeded in wearing a 6 inch diameter hole through this wall because of his relentless obsession to defeat it. What we are up against are millions of dumb ignorant roosters like this willing to take up where this rooster left off battling this same knothole in the wall.

Eventually, dumb as the concept is, we can never doubt that the knothole will indeed wear big enough for them to successfully get through it creating a backdoor.

one square mile should be carved out for the actual government, largely avoiding any residential areas, and then the rest should be given to Maryland.

Conversely, it is too small, so create it but take Alexandria and Arlington from Virginia, and take Montgomery County from Maryland.

That might be enough to push Virginia back to a GOP state, and make Maryland competitive.
