People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called on the University of Texas and the University of Georgia to end the use of live mascots after an incident before their Sugar Bowl matchup on Tuesday.
Bevo, the Texas Longhorns' steer mascot, charged Uga, the Georgia Bulldogs' dog mascot, before the game, creating a brief moment of chaos for the people around the animals. The pre-game kerfuffle caught the attention of the animal rights organization.
"It's indefensible to subject animals to the stress of being packed up, carted from state to state, and paraded in front of a stadium full of screaming fans," PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange said in a statement Wednesday. "It's no surprise that a skittish steer would react to a perceived threat by charging, and PETA is calling on the University of Texas and the University of Georgia to learn from this dangerous incident, retire their live-animal mascots, and stick to the talented costumed mascots who can lead cheers, react to the crowd, and pump up the team."

Neither universities have responded to PETAs request.

The HBU mascot is a husky, and students volunteer to care for him/her. You’d better believe that dog is loved and spoiled.
Ralphie form the University of Colorado is even wilder. There is no way I’m running around a field with a buffalo, and I handle cattle daily.
What if your team’s name was “The Screaming Banshees”? Do we leave them at home? I say sic them on PETA.
Che Guevara was right when he said it’s easier to blow up trains than it is to get them to run on time...
I guess Georgia Tech shouldn’t bring
live Yellow Jackets to their games.
It was a special type of stupid to bring
the Bulldog and Steer onto close association however
Perfect liberal thinking..."I don't like it, so no one should be allowed to [fill in the blank]." Keep your hands off my pets and my guns!
I call on animals everywhere to stop using the idiots of PETA as human shields.
But if a malignant, vicious organization that seeks to remove the freedom of individuals to interact with animals -- including by kidnapping and executing those animals -- says that the sun rises in the east, I neither endorse nor agree with them. The only thing I might observe is that they probably have some ulterior motive in saying that.
Don't support evil.
My Uncle had a bull named Tony who weighed over a ton. He always seemed pretty tame and mild mannered.
Still Daddy told me to never get close to him. I did notice my Cousins seemed to ignore him, not scared at all.
Especially with the bulldog dressed in a team sweatshirt that's the same color as a matador's cape.
To me, the liberals are the ones who automatically assume they are the virtuous ones when a pet is annoying you.
Bevo was a pissed off MOFO.
PETA is never right about anything for the right reasons.
I don’t support the killing of animals. You are twisting what I said.
Our first obligation is to help other humans.
I know the look well. And the sheer size of an animal can be very intimidating. With range beef it is always the cows with calf that are very aggressive more so than the bulls.
As I was growing up my Grandmother had to keep reminding me that man could once take down mammoths and mastodons. It kind of mentally helped a bit with the size intimidation. lol
This just brought back a whole bunch of funny memories... :)
And yet you support their lunacy...
Not every pet owner is a PETA fanatic.
I just think PETA is right about this.
Try to separate the issue from your preconceived ideas about groups of people.
UT will cave.
I was on campus to do a seminar on certain aeronautic topics.
I noted in the materials that my name had been Anglicized by someone and it did not note I was Israeli or an officer in the IDF.
I was informed this was to avoid campus unrest.
I introduced myself by my real name and said I was an officer in the IDF. Several people immediately got up and left.
