President Trump said Sunday that Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan will become acting Pentagon chief on Jan. 1, greatly accelerating the exit of current Defense Secretary James Mattis who had promised to stay on the job until the end of February.
The president announced on Twitter that Mr. Shanahan will take the reins of the Defense Department at the beginning of 2019. Its unclear whether Mr. Mattis decided to leave his post earlier than expected or whether hes being forced out ahead of schedule by the White House.
A former Boeing executive, Mr. Shanahan has been deputy defense secretary since July 2017.
I am pleased to announce that our very talented Deputy Secretary of Defense, Patrick Shanahan, will assume the title of Acting Secretary of Defense starting January 1, 2019, Mr. Trump tweeted. Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing. He will be great!

Trump responds by withdrawing troops from Syria and Afghanistan and Mattis departs.
Trump has a trump card up his sleeve.
Euroweenies also take note.
I know nothing about this person, but hope he can be a strong leader.
We CAN do both..
ISIS members making it to south america and entering here illegally are quite a big threat too.
The quicker Syria is at least somewhat simmered down, the better.

Education
A native of Washington state, Shanahan attended the University of Washington where he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in mechanical engineering. He also holds a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Career
Shanahan joined Boeing in 1986, becoming involved in Computer Services and the Boeing 777 program. Over the course of his career, he held management roles with respect to the Boeing Missile Defense Systems, as well as 737, 747, 767, 777 and 787 commercial airline programs. He also played a key role spearheading the recovery of Boeing’s 787 program, and has been known there as “Mr. Fix-it” from as early as 2008.
Shanahan served Boeing Commercial Airplanes as vice president and general manager of the Boeing 757 program, with responsibility for the design, production and profitability of the 757 family of planes. He also held leadership positions on the Boeing 767 program and in the fabrication division.
Shanahan then served as vice president and general manager for Boeing Rotorcraft Systems in Philadelphia. He was responsible for all U.S. Army Aviation programs and site activities in Philadelphia and Mesa, Arizona. Programs at these facilities included the V-22 Osprey, CH-47 Chinook and the AH-64D Apache.
Shanahan served as vice president and general manager of Boeing Missile Defense Systems, starting in December 2004 overseeing the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, Airborne Laser and Advanced Tactical Laser programs. He served as vice president and general manager of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner program, where he led the program during a critical period of the aircraft’s development from 2007 to 2008. He next served as senior vice president of Airplane Programs at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, beginning in December 2008.
In April 2016, he became senior vice president, Supply Chain & Operations for Boeing. His responsibilities in that position included manufacturing operations and supplier management functions, notably carrying out advanced manufacturing technologies and global supply chain strategies.
Shanahan was a member of the Boeing Executive Council.
Deputy Secretary of Defense
On March 16, 2017, President Trump announced his intent to nominate Shanahan for Deputy Secretary of Defense, the Pentagon’s second-highest civilian position. Building upon Trump’s proposed Pentagon budget, Shanahan was nominated to spearhead the plans to increase the size of the military.
Shanahan’s Senate confirmation hearing took place on June 20, 2017. During the hearing, Senator John McCain, a proponent of giving lethal weapons to Ukraine, threatened to block Shanahan’s nomination over his response in a written statement about whether or not the U.S. should provide such weapons to Ukraine. Shanahan said he did not have access to classified military information in order to make a decision on the matter.
Captain Jeff Davis, a spokesman at the Pentagon, stated that Bob Work, the current Deputy Secretary of Defense appointed by President Obama, would remain in the position until Shanahan’s confirmation. Shanahan was confirmed by the United States Senate with a vote of 927 on July 18, 2017 and became the 33rd Deputy Secretary of Defense on July 19, 2017. His direct superior is the United States Secretary of Defense.

He reached his expiration date, and is starting to smell. Yup, get him gone now.
Never wore a uniform and knows the Defense business.
Perfect.
Why wait till Jan 1 ? Why not Monday December 24th ? The general is eager to return to the swamp and start writing his book, why hold him back.
Engineer and MBA who worked at Boeing for over 20 years before somehow getting picked by Mattis as his #2.
No military experience. Confirmed 92-7. An “independent” voter.
Hmmmm interesting. If this were Bush Id have already seen chants of neocon, insider, business globalist.
However its mysteriously quiet....hmmmmm
Mattis to depart the Swamp on Jan 1, scheduled to appear on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer on Jan 2. to discuss his upcoming blepharoplasty surgery, among other things.
Yeah I believe there is something fixing to happen on the border that will make the liberals heads explode in 3D.
I think it has more to do with Mattis throwing Trump under the bus with his resignation letter. The press pounce on it and that, rightly, upset Trump.
I’m a registered independent too. Never voted for a D, but most Rs make me ill, ‘cept for Trump.
What could go wrong?
Here’s an interesting article on him. Sounds like a corporate business analyst, process guy more than anything.
Notable that he reportedly wasn’t close with Mattis—despite Mattis presumably being the guy who hired him.
They have been coming from the ME long before ISIS was a household name. We caught 4 Iranians in '06 carrying two shoulder fired launchers each just out of Falfurrias headed north. That night it was all hands on deck from DPS, DHS, and us. The small band of brothers that on our own dime spend weekends running around in the dark.
He can leave. Better to have someone who is on board overseeing the removal of troops from Syria, than someone who would be handling it half-heartedly.
OK, so we have to assume quite a decent number MADE IT THOUGH throughout the decades.
How much weaponry is here and why haven’t they used it yet?
Bad. Bad. Bad.
Whoever heard of a country not protecting its borders?!?!?
It’s nation survival 101!!!
I know Eisenhower got rid of a million illegals.
But why didnt he build a wall back then when the country would have been VERY MUCH behind it and it would have sailed through congress.
