Newly elected New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described Democratic socialist, called for a furlough of congressional salaries in the event of another government shutdown on Saturday.

*snip*

“It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision,” she wrote on Twitter. “Have some integrity.”

Actually mutiny seems to be what a lot of Americans did to get President Trump elected!

There’s just something about women speaking their minds.
Remember the wife of Nixon’s Attorney General Mitchell?
Martha? But you gotta watch out.

While on a phone call with Helen Thomas about the Watergate break-in, King pulled the phone cord from the wall. [Martha] was held against her will in a California hotel room and forcefully sedated by a psychiatrist after a physical struggle with five men that left her needing stitches. Nixon aides, in an effort to discredit Mitchell, told the press that she had a “drinking problem”.

> Congress shouldn’t be paid anything. If candidates can’t succeed in the private sector they shouldn’t be allowed to hold office. <

On some level that makes sense. But then consider the old days, back when police officers didn’t have a union. They were paid very little, and a lot of cops had to find work on the side. They were vulnerable to bribery.

Bribery of Congressmen is enough of a problem now, with the bribes disguised as “campaign contributions”. I suspect that if their salaries were reduced, you’d see even more of that.

I agree with you. The GOP needs to stop pointing and gloating about her. Don Jr. increases her stature with each smart-alecky tweet he posts about her.

Don Jr. diminishes his own stature by the same action. We don’t need the president’s son yelling wisecracks from the Peanut Gallery. Not so frequently anyway. When he’s ready to run for office, this image is not going to help him.
He will be seen as for the most part, a mouthy, non-serious person.

haha. Well said. She makes an excellent, common sense point. It may be the first and only one. But I agree. If one choses to sit out their work day and not show up. Then no paycheck. Simple.

While legislating that is unlikely, she is welcome to refuse/donate her entire salary for that period as an example to others.

This woman is being groomed behind the scenes by powerful Democrats and possibly globalists. Because there's no way a bartender goes into politics and suddenly becomes a powerful Representative-elect issuing statements.

Very astute observation. There are many new faces in DC after the midterms, but she seems to be the only one the media's interested in quoting. Suspicious.

You would think they're setting up the new Obama, but she's too young to run in '20. Maybe '24?

“In 20 years she will be the Republican Nominee for President”

They say you aren’t a Conservative until you have something to “conserve!”

In her case, a stopped clock is right twice a day! I guess we know when hers stops!

I, for one, find the fact that so many FReepers agree with her very disturbing.

There is only one sensible way for the Democrats to settle this: A best-of-three mud wrestling match between Ocasio-Cortez and Pelosi.

Ocasio-Cortez is younger, and so is presumably stronger. But Pelosi is sly, and experienced. It should be an interesting match.

It’s extremely dumb. Imagine you get a job and before your first day you tell your potential coworkers they shouldn’t take their paychecks because virtue-shaming.

She’s a complete dolt.

Unfair advantage to Pelosi.

She is as old as any dirt she would wrestle in, and thus be camouflaged.

Geez FReepers! What is this “stopped clock” “squirrel finds a nut” stuff?

She hasn’t even had a paycheck yet! She’s gleefully virtue-shaming at ABSOLUTELY no cost to her!

The eggnog must be way strong tonight.
