Thousands upon thousands of Venezuelans pour into Colombia over the crowd cross-country bridge, their faces gaunt, carrying little more than a backpack. Rail-thin women cradle their tiny babies, and beg along the trash-strewn gutters. Teens hawk everything from cigarettes to sweets and water for small change.
The young, the old and the disabled cluster around the lone Western Union office – recently established to deal with the Venezuelan influx – in the hopes of receiving or sending a few dollars to send home. Without passports or work permits, the Venezuelans – many with university degrees or decent jobs in what was once the wealthiest nation in Latin America – are now resorting to whatever it takes to survive.~snip~
One Venezuelan mother, 30-year-old Marie Chaparral, routinely treks across to Colombia to seek healthcare and vaccines for her three young children, one being only a few weeks old. She explained that she, like most expectant mothers in Venezuela, had to buy all necessary birthing procedural needs – from the painkillers to the scalpels to the towels and hospital gowns – on the black market in Colombia. Only then, lugging all her things to the hospital, would a doctor in Venezuela oversee the birth.

I understand that you haven’t been exposed to it, but there are very sound, reasonable, and sufficient grounds underlying the Catholic position on contraception.
If you knew what the Catholic position actually is, your arguments against it would be more convincing.

They would blame Venezuela’s failures on the heavy handed capitalism of the US. I wish I could recall the FReeper’s handle to give due credit, put I once saw the pithy comment here, years ago, that if every nation on earth embraced communism bar one remote island that held to free market principles, that island nation would be blamed for the global misery in all the communist nations.
They would be dead if they had to depend on socialism for their subsistence. The spillover from Colombia keeps them alive.

That is true! But all the same, the Catholic Church's position on contraception is one element that creates unsustainable population levels in most of Central and South America. So, insofar as its impact on the people of those areas, it really doesn't matter what the rationale the church gives for its position, it is still a significant contributor to the problem. And by extension, since the Catholic Church is also at the forefront of groups seeking to have the United States shoulder the economic impact of this overpopulation by helping to bring them here, even against the immigration laws of this country, they are also Anti-American in my view. But they have company, with the Mormon Church, and possibly others, doing essentially the same thing. Why do you think Jeff Flake is so adamantly against President Trump? He's a Mormon, doing his church's business trying to keep Trump from building the wall. BTW, I was raised a Mormon, so I understand what they are all about.

This should be for real, legitimate, honest foreign aid. A few ships with *surplus* government food, that will otherwise rot. Even just high protein, high fat cheese, and baby formula would be enough.
This humanitarian crisis would be the story of the year but for the chance of it reflecting adversely on socialism. Communists could inflict a holocaust (as they are in China) and there would be not a whisper of criticism in the media. It’s an outrage by the media that strips it of any moral authority to criticize anyone.

Back then, many of the people there were poor, but others were wealthy.
Now everyone there is suffering - except, of course, the socialist dictators themselves, I’m sure.
