A federal judge on Thursday sentenced James Wolfe, the former director of security for the Senate Intelligence Committee, to two months in prison for lying about his relationships with reporters to FBI agents investigating the leak of classified information.
U. S. District Judge Kentanji B. Jackson told Mr. Wolfe that given his position in the government he should have understood the value of truthfulness in a national security investigation.
While addressing the court Wolfe was overcome with emotion, his sentences broken up by bouts of crying. He said his extramarital affair with a reporter humiliated my wife, myself and my family.
It was a significant lapse of judgment and a personal failure on my part, he told the court.
Prosecutors had requested two years in prison for Wolfe, who was sentenced on his 58th birthday.
Two years would have represented a significant departure upwards from sentence guidelines, Judge Jackson told the court. But prosecutors said a stronger sentence was warranted because of the severity of his Wolfes lies.
Wolfe pleaded guilty in October to a single charge of knowingly making a false statements investigators. He was not charged with leaking classified information, but prosecutors said in a court filing last week Wolfes lies caused significant disruption and significantly endangered the national security.
Attorneys for Wolfe argued their client should not have to serve anytime behind bars, saying he deeply regretted his actions.
Preston Burton, Wolfes attorney, told Judge Jackson his client still had support form some of the high-ranking government officials who worked with him during his 30-year Senate career.
Three U. S. Senators on the Intelligence Committee wrote a bipartisan letter in support of Wolfe.
These people know he pleaded guilty and knowing that, they still support him, Mr. Burton said.

WHY are these guys talking in the first place?
Unless you have notarized FACTS in front of you, YOU RISK AUTOMATIC JAIL TIME.
I have news for you, you don’t go to prison for a two month sentence. You go to jail, probably a county lock-up, or club-fed for blue collar crime.
Hello, we would like to ask you some questions.
Sorry, I’m not talking to you.
How difficult is that? Say nothing.
Stole classified information and knowingly provided to a newspaper, lied to the FBI and got only 2 months??? Since he is a rat, I should be happy he even got 2 months.
No excuse for this guy, he was security director for the Senate Intel Com.
How can this be possible? Is this a message to Flynn?
Is Wolfe going to be charged with leaking TopSecret documents, an actual felony?
if he had been charged with leaking, he would have implicated Burr, Warner and the rest of the Senate Intel Co.
This was a type of plea deal to protect the Committee
Twenty years is more appropriate.
It sounds like he was severely undercharged ...
BUT STILL, why are these talking, then getting burned on process? (process crimes)
These characters are NOT the sharpest knives in the drawer, apparently.
Yep, they were asking for 2 years and the judge gives him 2 months, that’s pathetic.
“He was not charged with leaking classified information”
And why is that?
I’m fine with 2 months for the lying. The FBI knew he had leaked the documents; no “investigation” was impeded by his lies.
Why wasn’t he charged with his real crime?: Leaking classified documents to his girlfriend, knowing she would publish them. I guess Mark Warner had to be protected at all costs...
“James Wolfe sentenced to two months in prison for lying to FBI”
James Wolfe illegally leaked classified documents to the media.
That is far more serious than the process crime of lying to the FBI.
The fact is he only got two months and probably won’t serve even that.
My guess is that he was ordered to leak the classified info by higher ups. When caught he was promised a very light sentence and told to keep quiet about the real leakers.
The FBI is become America’s tyrant priest and confessor.
Never speak to the FBI, ever. Its a rigged game, dont play it.
I have news for you, you dont go to prison for a two month sentence. You go to jail, probably a county lock-up, or club-fed for blue collar crime.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exactly. Jail is different than prison. It is where you hang out until the trial or while awaiting sentencing.
And this guy will probably go to some health spa for awhile and it will be fine.
I’m sure Hillary is in line. /s
Too little, but far more than Hillary has ever gotten.
