Trump Looks to Military to Build Border Wall as Hopes in Congress Diminish

President Donald Trump has solidified his suggestion that the U.S. military will build the wall along the southern border, as the chances of Congress passing funding for the project by the Dec. 21 deadline shrinks.

“Because of the tremendous dangers at the Border, including large scale criminal and drug inflow, the United States Military will build the Wall!” Trump wrote in a Dec. 19 tweet.

The Pentagon has backed Trump, acknowledging there is a legal option to use military funds for border barriers, although also saying there’s no plan in place to do so.

“To date, there is no plan to build sections of the wall,” Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Jamie Davis said in a Dec. 12 statement, CNBC reported. “However, Congress has provided options under Title 10 U.S. Code that could permit the Department of Defense to fund border barrier projects, such as in support of counter-drug operations or national emergencies.”

Trump has asked Congress for $5 billion for the wall, but has faced a unified opposition from the Democrats and even from some Republicans.

He's still the President of the United States. This is an invasion, this is a threat to our national security, this represents a "clear and present danger".

As such, he could use his office to declare a national emergency, and allocate the funds necessary to fully fund the wall through military spending and could,if he had the fortitude, use the military to BUILD, AND MAN IT.

Will he take political heat? Yes. Will he take political flack? Yes, but he's getting that already. They are going to hate him and his policies anyway, no matter what he does. In light of those facts, he should stand up, man up and do it.

His primary responsibility is to secure the nation and "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC."

“Suggested”?

Last time I checked POTUS is also CINC (Commander In Chief) of all the military. He orders - they jump.

They won’t do it

The republicans would know they would be committing political suicide to remove President Trump

Sure the girls will probably try to remove him, Collins, Marcowski, Romney, Graham (I don’t trust him at all)

But that would only be 51 votes, not enough they need 67

While the GOPee is wallowing in visions of sugar plums, President Trump is working out the pathway to a Wall. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a fallback plan ready to go as a result of the crappy results of the midterms. My bet is on the military route.

With a Wall the lib judges can all pound sand. No one is getting in for these judges to exploit in attacking Trump.

It is my observation that the judiciary is the key weapon the Left is using in the coup against the Trump Presidency. We need a way to destroy this initiative. Any legal beagles have any ideas?

Let’s face the facts.
It’s over.
Trump was our last hope.

With the continued illegal immigration flowing across the border (11 million my a$$)in a few years Texas and Florida will be Hispanic democrat strongholds, and the democrats will have permanent power.

Ben Franklin told them “a Republic, if you can keep it!”
We couldn’t. We threw it away.

"To build the wall The House must originate the appropriations. The senate must also approve."

"Congress has provided options under Title 10 U.S. Code that could permit the Department of Defense to fund border barrier projects, such as in support of counter drug operations or national emergencies,” Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Jamie Davis said. I say have the Army Corp of Engineers build the wall as part of their engineering training.

Yep. Let the Army construction engineers build it. It doesn’t have to be built all at once. As long as there’s some progress between now and 2020, we’re good! If voters want the construction to continue after 2020, they can reelect President Trump. Simple as that.

"It won’t take decades to build a wall. A wall is nothing but a highway turned on it’s side."

I'm glad that the wall won't be built that way. It would get as ugly as a melted asphalt fence during summers. ;-)

The President is afraid to use his powers to build the wall. Seems weak when it come to his signature issue.

Temper, temper Central_VA - you went to all that trouble to prove your point? The Panama Canal took ten years and $15B in today's money and killed 5,600 Americans (and we gave the Canal away, thanks to the idiot Democrats) and we don't have nearly the manning and commitment to do that sort of thing with today's Corps of Engineers and you know it.

Spent any recent time with the Department of Defense? If you had, you'd know that the Pentagon budget is fully committed to supporting the current forces, the R&D for the services, and a large chunk goes to paying retired service folks. Where, exactly would the funds come from to support the $5B (or a lot more, since it's our DoD that would be running things) to divert to build the wall?

I do appreciate your ardor and hard work assembling all that wonderful history for me but talk to me about today's situation, the current manning of the Corps of Engineers, and funds actually available.

A small aside: a few years ago, I was tasked to develop and carry out the US response to the Threshold Test Ban Treaty and I developed a budget of $58M to do the job. The DoD took that money from the M1 Tank program and I was hated man in the Pentagon for a while (I did return $13M when it turned out that I could save some money when we carried out the program).

So, what's your experience?

I am Civil Engineer and I know what it takes to build a highway and a wall is not that much different but less earth to move. The time can be vastly reduced if a horizontal slip form is used.

Aw, c'mon - if you really are a Civil Engineer, you know very well that there's a big difference between building a highway and building a wall. That may awe the uneducated but you and I know the difference.

How did the Israelis build their wall? Seems to be effective.

The real problem with building a continuous border wall is that the terrain varies so much along the route, we have environmental/wildlife issues, local jurisdictions to deal with, etc.,etc. We as a country are definitely capable of the engineering but President Trump has zero support among the Democrats and possibly less with the Republicans. I thought we had a chance when he openly threatened the government shutdown but for some reason, he folded. I'd build the damn thing myself if he asked me but he seems to have lost the battle with the entrenched politicians.

He should have used us: closed the government and asked us to pound the politicians.

The wall can be built I could design it and build it. No terrain is too tough to overcome. How much does CNN pay you to discourage us?
