President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday that gives federal employees the day off on Christmas Eve.
“All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Monday, December 24, 2018, the day before Christmas Day,” the order says.
Certain offices may need to be open, however, to carry out responsibilities related to "national security, defense, or other public need," according to the order.
“The heads of executive departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2018, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need,” the order continues.
Past presidents have also given federal workers the day off.
While Christmas Day is a federal holiday, giving federal employees additional time off has been inconsistent for different presidents.
Christmas fell on a Monday last year, but there was no extra day off for workers.
In 2012, former President Barack Obama excused federal employees from duty on Christmas Eve when it fell on a Monday. In 2014, he closed the federal government on the day after Christmas Day. The following year, workers were given a half day on Christmas Eve.
Former President George W. Bush did give workers the day off on Christmas Eve in 2001 and in 2007when it landed on a Monday. (Fox 5)

So Trump is going to veto the spending bill?????
When that happens you might be right, until then? NOPE.
Most certainly it will be a paid day off.
Excellent comment!! And with our Leftist judges that might just happen.
True, but if the offices are closed on Christmas eve, the parties will move to Friday, so no work will happen then either.
Youll want all day to-morrow, I suppose? said Scrooge.
If quite convenient, sir.
Its not convenient, said Scrooge, and its not fair. If I was to stop half-a-crown for it, youd think yourself ill-used, Ill be bound?
The clerk smiled faintly.
And yet, said Scrooge, you dont think me ill-used, when I pay a days wages for no work.
The clerk observed that it was only once a year.
A poor excuse for picking a mans pocket every twenty-fifth of December! said Scrooge, buttoning his great-coat to the chin. But I suppose you must have the whole day. Be here all the earlier next morning.
The clerk promised that he would; and Scrooge walked out with a growl.
That's what my company does, and that's on top of the 3 weeks vacation we get to start.
I like my company.
Well he would naturally give a “new gift.” Giving an old gift would be rude.
You are lucky to have them, and they are lucky to have you.
[One less mail day.]
The mail never stops! it just keeps coming and coming and coming!
And the more you get it out the more it keeps coming IN!!!
And then there’s Mother’s Day!
And then Publisher’s Clearing House Day!!!!!
Thanks, Kas. Merry Christmas!
There has been a decades long tradition of the Presidents giving the day before or after Christmas as a day off when Christmas falls on either Thursday or Tuesday.
“... I mean, who wants to have dental work done?”
There. Fixed it.
“Because 10 Federal Holidays just arent enough.”
I’d be happier if most of them took off the whole year.
Folks; I RETIRED from federal service.
The amount of work performed on Christmas Eve is just about the same whether you’re at work or elsewhere.
So; same amount of ‘output’ for the same amount of pay.
Bingo!
We used to roam the halls; looking in each area to see what kind of goodies were to be consumed!
Oh?
When I worked for the Navy Department, a person got 6 days vacation the first 2 years of employment, 13 days from 3-15 years, and 26 days 16 'til retirement.
Sick leave never varied from 13 a year and there were NO 'personal' days.
I must confess to abusing the sick days early in my career; taking off when I wasn't sick.
But it came to bite me severely when I was out for over a week with NO days to take; only 'taking' a loss of wages!
It was quite a wake-up call!
I never lied about the days any more and had a lot to cash in when I did retire.
Cough - cough.
(This has been changed at the federal level to allow the days to carry over. Quite a good thing at the end of a career when some serious, long term medical problems do occur.)
Bingo!
I had a 4 day - 10 hours a day week; then a 5 day - 8 hours a day week.
That way we had a 3 day weekend every two weeks.
Boy; did THAT change some lifestyles!
