President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday that gives federal employees the day off on Christmas Eve.
“All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Monday, December 24, 2018, the day before Christmas Day,” the order says.
Certain offices may need to be open, however, to carry out responsibilities related to "national security, defense, or other public need," according to the order.
“The heads of executive departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2018, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need,” the order continues.
Past presidents have also given federal workers the day off.
While Christmas Day is a federal holiday, giving federal employees additional time off has been inconsistent for different presidents.
Christmas fell on a Monday last year, but there was no extra day off for workers.
In 2012, former President Barack Obama excused federal employees from duty on Christmas Eve when it fell on a Monday. In 2014, he closed the federal government on the day after Christmas Day. The following year, workers were given a half day on Christmas Eve.
Former President George W. Bush did give workers the day off on Christmas Eve in 2001 and in 2007when it landed on a Monday. (Fox 5)

Will a federal judge block this, on the grounds it violates “separation of church and state”?
Literally Hitler.
Because 10 Federal Holidays just aren’t enough.
So this is just for 12-24-2018?
Hmmmm.....
It would be amusing to watch one try. His staff would conduct a walkout. Including his bodyguards.
Trump should have worded it "In celebration of the birth of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, I hereby give federal employees...", just to twist the knife in.
If this only applies to this year, I’m wondering if this is a negotiating tactic...
Are you really that cold? Does your employer give you Christmas eve off?
Do you really think much gets accomplished on Christmas eve? Heck, it’s government, not much gets accomplished on any given day, however, I think its a good move.

In addition to the month of paid vacation they already get plus sick days, personal days......

My wife works for the State. She doesn’t get Monday off. Full day as usual.
Unfortunately, my wife does not get an El Puente this Monday. She told me she has to work that day but I suspect, because it is a dental office, it will be only a half a day. I mean, who wants to have dental work done on Christmas Eve?
Only if it lands on a weekend.
The declaration is just common sense.
No work will be accomplished by the federal government or virtually any other employer in the country on Monday December 24, 2018
For me, Christmas Eve is even better than Christmas Day itself. So having that day off is pretty important to me.
One less mail day.
If this is a one-off, that’s not the reason Trump did it. IMHO. :-)
The National Review staff obviously has more time to do their “NeverTrump” activities on FR now.
Why bother?
Half of federal works would not show up on Christmas Eve, ave the half that do show up dont do anything.
Not a bad deal, thats for sure.
