Ohio Congressman Warren Davidson thinks crowdfunding may provide a solution to the controversial proposal of building a wall on the Mexican border.
And, perhaps more notably, he suggested using a cryptocurrency to do so.
During an interview with NPRs Steve Inskeep, the U.S. lawmaker explained that he has already proposed letting the American public pay for the wall, which is opposed by Democrats but mades up a key aspect of President Donald Trumps list of 2016 campaign promises. In particular, Davidson told Inskeep, he has suggested a private funding program wherein the American people, or whomever should choose to donate, (including residents of Mexico) would be able to fund the walls construction.
He went on to add:
You could do it with sort of like a crowdfunding site or you could do a blockchain and you could have WallCoins, but you could raise the money and frankly if we get it right at the Treasury you could even pay with Mexican pesos....[snip]
Davidson is an outspoken supporter of the cryptocurrency space, having previously held a round-table event with more than 80 representatives from both the crypto and finance industries to discuss possible legislation for initial coin offerings.

I’d buy a coin.
There are always the local codes to deal with concerning local permits and border “right of away easements” and Etc. You could do this but making the connection to the existing fence easement would be impossible without fed approval. So they would just pass through this gap between the two.
And even these local governments can be controlled by the feds through funding extortion. Look at what happened to my state of Az a few years ago when we tried to enforce immigration laws on our own as a state. Obama’s fed sued us and threatened to stop all fed funding to our state. And it worked... We had no choice but to comply or die as a state.
I’m in!
There is absolutely no reason that this couldn't be a separate line on the 1040, just like donating to the presidential election campaign fund checkoff as it appears on US income tax return forms as the question "Do you want $3 of your federal tax to go to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund?"
Do you want $3 of your federal tax to go to the Federal Abortion Fund?
This is the only source of federal funds for abortion. No one who believes abortion is murder should be forced to pay for abortion. Anyone who thinks it's a right to choose is free to choose to earmark their own money to fund it.
Nice to know you have a problem for every solution.
Good luck getting the leftists who run the blockchain scam to go along with it. Get a clue, Davidson.
“...but it could be easily corrupted.”
...going a bit fast for me here but it sounds like corruption from the git-go. I thought one way or ‘tuther, Mexico was going to pay for “The Wall”. Whether Mexican Treasury or US Treasury, funding is there. And sharing the burden of funding across programs, the sum of other programs will not skip a beat. Two things are missing; Mexico has no incentive to pay and our politicians lack WILL.
Lipstick on a pig or a rose by another name, sounds like a voluntary tax. If only it would remain a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.
Voluntary Tax; other than being the premise of how IRS operates, if approved, this scheme will end up like Spanish-American War surtax on telephone service that survived nearly a century.
How about these Republican congress critters get off their collective butts and fund the wall with our tax dollars while they still have the majority in both houses?
It is almost a guarantee that the Democrats would challenge this with incessant legal filings - probably claiming that its a campaign contribution of sorts.
Let’s divide up the money we spend on illegals: add up their welfare, foodstamps, education, Emergency room visits, jail, court and prison costs for 10 years .... then contrast that number with what it costs t build the wall.
Citizens can check off a box on their income tax form to fund ONE or the other.... illegals OR the Wall. If illegals aren’t ‘funded’ round them up and send all of ‘em home.
I thought a law was passed, about 20 years ago, approving the building of a wall.
The hold up has been funding.
Well then maybe it would work. Now who is going to set it up and make sure so we can get it done?
“The problem I see is even with all the money in the world it will still have to go through the government bureaucracy to be implemented where it needs to go.”
My understanding is some of it, at least, has been “approved,” just not funded. But probably not all of it is approved, reflecting recent plans. Like the 30 foot modern choice.
And hell yeah, I’d donate. It would get 5 billion.
Lets also set up one for people to pay for the free stuff that illegals get. That way taxpayers who do not want to pay for the free stuff will be off the hook. Only the money donated can be spent for this.
Me too... That would be great!
If he doesn't, it will be hung around his neck like GHWB's no new taxes pledge. Tax Mexico remittances, have a border entry tax from Mexico, stop foreign aid to Mexico ($85 million), etc. Remittances to Mexico are on pace to be $32 billion in 2018. A 10% tax and there's $3 billion for the wall.
Globally, migrants sent an estimated $574 billion to their home countries in 2016 In Latin America and the Caribbean together remittances rose to $74.3 billion. Put a 10% tax on these amounts. This would fund the wall an a whole lot more.
So blockchaining is actually ... brilliant. You would see so much money pour in that we would have to have secondary projects once the fund for the wall topped out at 25B or whatever.
Would have to be ready to reject both the pump-and-dumpers and the Nork/PLA attacks on the blockchain.
