GM Wants Congress to Extend an Electric Vehicle Tax Credit That Trump Dislikes
Fortune via Yahoo ^ | 12/10/2018 | Uncredited

When General Motors announced plant closings and a 15% workforce cut, the plan was to plow savings into electric and autonomous vehicle development, which is seen as the industry’s future.

But selling electric vehicles (EVs) will get tough without a $7,500 credit that the Trump Administration has said will end. Now GM is fighting to keep the consumer tax credit, reported the Associated Press.

[SNIP] Many Republicans say the credit is a subsidy that wastes taxpayer money. The law that provides the credit caps its use when a manufacturer has sold 200,000 vehicles, a number that GM gm is close to reaching. President Trump said he was “looking at cutting all GM subsidies, including for electric cars,” when the company announced that it would close auto plants in the U.S. One of Trump’s campaign platforms was a promise to increase manufacturing jobs.

GM and others, including Tesla and Nissan, are pressuring Congress to end the cap and make the credit available going forward. The tax reduction makes electric vehicles more affordable for many.

Buick is an upscale brand that sells well in China, whose car market is up to twice the size of the US market.

The original idea for Saturn, entry level vehicles with solid warranty and a non-negotiable price, was a good idea. GM blew it by making Saturn a head-to-head competitor with their other brands.

And ... you left out that the battery doesn’t begin to slowly deteriorate the minute it is assembled and after several years has so little capacity that it must be replaced

I will consider an electric automobile when they can get 400 miles per charge at 70+ MPH with heater or AC going and recharge in less than 15 minutes........................…

In the middle of a northern winter.

I had a diesel years ago in Buffalo, and I had to plug it in to warm it so it would start. Batteries don't do well in the cold.

With gas at $2 or less a gallon, good luck selling any EV’s. A few years back, I would have thought about it, when it was near $4, but now I sometimes find myself wishing I’d bought an SUV or muscle car. Maybe I will sometime in the future.

As it is, people (including me) don’t want golf carts, we want that good old-fashioned Tim Allen (grunt grunt) horsepower. And we’re not about to change our minds anytime soon.

Pontiac is/was GM. Buick is a very good GM brand and Saturns suck.

Lead-Acid Batteries don't. Lithium-Ion Batteries are even worse................

Wealth redistribution.

It’s a crime that this scam was ever started and even worse that it has continued for so many years.

I’ve noticed that there are now many Priuses and other hybrids on the used car lots, and they ain’t selling because of that one factor...................

I always hated Buicks. I found the ‘ick’ part to be most representative.

Olds was not a favorite either. Pontiac the best of the cars.

I could get behind GMCs.

I hope President Trump knows better. If electric cars were feasible (same with solar panels and windmills), they wouldn't need subsidies.

Whatever happened to spending money on infrastructural?

It should be obvious that no one has any business trying to sell a car with a taxpayer subsidy attached to it. That’s crazy thinking. If the product has to be subsidized to sell,it’s probably about as practical & sought after as “renewable energy”. What a joke! Any manufacturer selling products this way can pound sand as far as I’m concerned.

Maybe you bought the wrong models of Buicks. I’ve had 2 Park Avenues that were as good or better than any American car I’ve owned. Most of my many cars over the years WERE American cars & all the Buicks I’ve had were good. Many of the newer smaller models that GM built were just generic versions with different model names.

I remember in the GM bailout, the only dealerships that were targeted for closure were owned by conservatives. Why should we continue to subsidize them now?

Even with the $7500 subsidy, people don’t want them...................
///////////////////

Not only don’t want them, can’t afford them. Bottom line tesla sedan is over 50k. Most car makers are eliminating sedans because people need SUVs. Who gets a 50k electric sedan? Only someone who gets it for $42.5 where the discount is paid for by someone else.

No subsidies for GM.

Should have been cut right after inauguration.

It was a crime they were in place to begin with.

My wife’s 9 year old Camry hybrid keeps trucking along just fine.

I cannot complain about that car in the least.
