There's a good chance the Chinese will retaliate for the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou by targeting American businesses in China, former assistant U.S. trade representative Jeff Moon told CNBC on Thursday.

Meng was arrested on Saturday in Canada and is facing extradition to the United States reportedly for violating U.S. sanctions on Iran.

"The Chinese can crack down quite easily because those laws are vague and they can interpret them however they want," he added.

I have no sympathy for any American business person who gets arrested in China. Bring the jobs and capital back to America. Rot in the Chinese jails for all I care.

So, the US is supposed to just ignore it when Chinese companies violate the Iran sanctions with impunity? China wasn’t even party to Obama’s BS “deal” with China, which had no backing in law in the first place. It went away with the stroke of Trump’s pen just as it came into existence with one from Obama’s. If Huawei wants to violate international law they should be ready to face the consequences.

We have a Chinese citizen in Canada, and the US is asking Canada to turn over the Chinese citizen for violating a US Sanction regarding Iran.

I don't see in the article that a violation of international law is alleged. Is the violation of a US Sanction a violation of international law?

UPI reports: "Meng, 46, faces "unspecified charges in the Eastern District of New York..."

The Guardian reports:

For the first time in the history of the UN, the United States – a permanent member of the security council with veto power – is engaging in penalizing nations across the entire world; not for violating a security council resolution, rather, for abiding by it. The resolution in question, UN security council resolution 2231, was authored (including by the US itself) and passed unanimously by the council.

Now, if we want to penalize Huawei by restricting importation of products/services from Huawei (and we have) that is logical.

But, it seems wrong to be arresting a foreign national in third county violation of US law. Why should Canada do this? Jail time would be cake!
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s hacked server lead to the murder of 18-20 Chinese CIA assets. No one talks about that any more.

Huh.

What are they going to do to American companies doing business there to retaliate? Force them to give up their trademark procedures and manufacturing secrets and such in order to keep doing business there?

Outrageous! They would never do that!

Oh, wait...

Is that the same China, within ten years of Iranian nuclear might, that is reeducating Muslims?

I think the Huawei guy needs some reeducation himself.

... said Moon, who served as assistant U.S. trade representative to China under President Barack Obama.

Obama sure had some cowardly fools working on trade.

Fortunately the Chinese have kept their markets closed to the USA and thus limited just how many American businesses are doing business in china, except as buyers that is.

US sanctions are not international law.

If China imposes sanctions on another country, we do not have to abide by them.

How about Canadians in China?

It was the Canadian government that turned him over to the U.S.

Did P.M. Justin Trudeau ok this? Hard to see that he didn't.

The Canadians arrested her.

The arrest is related to violations of U.S. sanctions, a person familiar with the matter said. Reuters was unable to determine the precise nature of the violations.

You would think the Canadians would have to have a reason to arrest someone...

Who greenlit the arrest?

Haven’t seen ANYTHING about that. Somebody in the US asked the Canadians to do it (apparently, though I may not believe that either). Eyebrows may have done it just to screw with us.

At this point, why does the US need China?

We can make more stuff in the US and trade with East Asian countries that ring China. We will also, thankfully, be forced to make products of strategic and military importance here.

China is a dangerous state. It’s too bad that their people haven’t stood up to the totalitarianism and authoritarian government. It’s been that way for nearly 70 years. But, ultimately, you have to blame the people and their culture for these abuses.

Just read an article that said a Chinese person who was arrested in Canada in the past fought extradition. It took 2 years of legal wrangling before final extradition to the US took place.

Article said the Huaiwei CFO’s case would likely take months or years.

Apparently Trudeau was told about the planned arrest a few days before hand and agreed to let the arrest take place.
