German prosecutors on Friday charged a 95-year-old man with more than 36,000 counts of accessory to murder over his alleged time as a Nazi concentration camp guard during World War II.
The allegations against the accused, identified only as Hans H., concern atrocities committed at the Mauthausen camp in Austria.
Hans H. is believed to have belonged to the SS-Totenkopfsturmbann (Death's Head Battalion) between summer 1944 and spring 1945 at Mauthausen, part of the Nazis' vast network of concentration camps.
Prosecutors argue that by working as a guard at the site, the accused contributed to tens of thousands of prisoner deaths.
During his time at the camp, at least 36,223 inmates died. Guards took part in killings by gas, fatal injections, gunfire and other means, while many more prisoners died of hunger or frostbite, prosecutors said.
"The accused is believed to have been aware of all the methods of killing as well as the disastrous living conditions of the inmates," their statement said.
"It is believed that he knew these methods of killing were used against a large number of people and that they could only be killed in this way, with this degree of regularity, if the victims were guarded by people like him."
A total of 200,000 people were held at Mauthausen, half of whom died before the camp's liberation by US troops in May 1945.
A Berlin court must now decide whether the case against Hans H. can proceed.
Germany has been racing to put on trial surviving SS personnel, after the legal basis for prosecuting former Nazis changed in 2011 with the landmark conviction of former guard John Demjanjuk.

If they have evidence of him DOING something, then albeit.
If they just have proof that he was there, thats not enough.
A majority of soldiers were not even members of the party. Nazis were never the majority party, until they took over everything.
Evil never seems to receive adequate punishment, IMHO.
However, as much as I complain, I’m NOT in charge of that Department, LOL!
The time to mete out justice has long since past, and this is just vindictiveness.
Why not try and execute all surviving U-Boat crewmen? The slaughtered merchants by the thousands. And if that is the case...why not all the factory workers that made war material? The legal term assessory really opens the aperture. Who made all the logistical deliveries to the camps?
It is ridiculous to state the guilty are only those stationed at the camp.
Sorry. I did take it personally. I can handle the clinical coldness with which they viewed the Jews; its simply the truth. I just misinterpreted your nailing their coldness as also feeling that way, and I wanted to give you a tiny pointed reminder that some of us lost loved ones. Its ok. I get what you were saying now.
I agree. See my previous to gundog. My mistake.
Are we going to try the us servicemen who firebombed dresden civillians and killed more than 100,000 in one raid?
war is atrocity. war is hell. war is sh1t.
what counts as atrocities that we can go after people 50 years after a war, and the other atrocities committed by other soldiers that we are going to let slide because we like those orders?
Cripes on toast. He was a camp guard. a barney fife at a gate. for a matter of months. npt involved in the horrors, not involved in giving execution orders, not involved with executing in the gas chambers.
and lets remember that they let soros free to go and become a zillionaire and an American hater.....
if Americans hadn't come over in the war, millions more probably would have been killed...
Bingo. Can’t believe the Jewish orgs didn’t insist on an indictment for him. They could sue for his estate.
I have no Jewish heritage, but can be profoundly moved by the cautionary and succinct epitaph “ Never forget. “
As a kid, “Hogan’s Heroes” was already portraying the SS as hapless incompetents. That was just 20 years after the war ended. Hollywood will dumb down and trivialize anything. Small wonder that young adults are the way they are these days. If the Third Reich had invented television, they’d be ruling the planet, today.
As with all wars, it makes one wonder what those lives may have gone on to fulfill. Science, medicine, technology, etc. All the money that is spent on war - if it was turned to build things instead. Of course that is the way it has always been since the days of Cain and Able.
I wonder how many who are after anyone who might have been assigned to some of these places would have accepted the consequences of their own untimely demise by refusing the posting/orders given them .... Can't help but thinking of Jesus telling us who could throw the first stone...because while in our eyes, some sins seem greater than others, any who have sinned the least amount have been placed in the same bucket as those who have sinned the most in God's eyes...and He offers redemption for all of them.
If God let the geezer live to 95, I'm satisfied letting God decide when to finish him off....I'm 66 and wasn't born for some 7 years after the atrocities.
When do we get to see some Soviet NKVD on trial for murder? There are plenty of them still around; they had another eight years of mayhem after the nazis were wiped out.
Nothing - no corruption so black or vile - would surprise me about the Clintons or Soros...
Thats true about more dying working under Albert Speer than the death camps.
Netflix Hitlers Circle of Evil is an excellent doc. It verifies the death rates at the arms factories.
