Breaking: @joyent, Gabs new hosting provider, has just pulled our hosting service. They have given us until 9am on Monday to find a solution. Gab will likely be down for weeks because of this. Working on solutions. We will never give up on defending free speech for all people.

They were cut off because the synagogue shooter posted anti semetic comments there.
Quit with your disinformation. If you don’t know, just be quiet, and spare us.

Im not Jewish, but I left Gab behind because of the anti-Jewish THREATS...these were meant to do harm. I dont need crap like that in my computer screen.

Look: it had 10x more users than free Republic, which is viable.

I understand and I am certainly not up to date.
However, how would someplace like FR manage?
Servers at home directly tied to local backbone?
And who says the backbones wont censer?

Sort of like minds and twitter.
No real logic to their sites, like FR has.
If FR allowed direct uploads of pics adn text by certified members and allowed the posting to all on each thread to make the conversations more interesting it would be perfect. Perhaps by having a follow group for different subjects for each poster. I wouldn’t change anything else. Well, perhaps a less clunky back channel.

a libertarian can be a conservative’s best friend in the fight against leftist totalitarian fascism.

Backbones just don’t. There are contractual statements that prevent it. No data center would ever agree to billion dollar risks with censorship.

CodeToad:
Two years ago, I:
1) Got a junk dell box with a pentium D and a 40gb hard drive
2)Loaded Slackware Linux on it, learned Apache and HTML, and hand coded my own web page
3)Purchased a domain name and a dynamic IP address package through DynDNS
4)Hooked up my box to my wide open west cable internet connection and
5) Sweet, now I have an internet page
Question - am I now hosting myself (by definition) or doing something else?
To: Chickensoup
P.S. I am implementing over $35 billion in revenue through 6 data centers. No way in Hell would the investors agree to ANY risks to their data in such a business venture.

Congratulations on hosting a web site on your own server.
Assuming all you want to do is post whatever you like on your website your point of failure is your "domain name and a dynamic IP address package through DynDNS".
For instance, regardless of where your sever is for us to find akalinin.com (or whatever) our browsers have to find the lookup table in a Domain Name Server. Only internet registrars can put an entry in the tables used by DNS.
So if DynDNS decides your content "violates their terms of service" then they will take down your DNS entry.
If they REALLY want to screw you they will also confiscate your name, which technically they own and are providing to you. This was done to The Daily Stormer, by their DNS provider.
So, it's cool that you did what you did, but the same tactics being used to take Gab down could still be used against you.

Thank you for answering that question! The spaghetti like terminology of IT sometimes confuses the hell out of me.
I've had to use IPchains rules to block the millions upon millions of attemps to break into my little system, mostly from Asia.
Have a nice rest of your Sunday.
To: akalinin
P.S. You can also get Comcast Business class service which will allow you to buy static IP addresses so that you don’t need DynDNS. That’s if Comcast is in your area.

Thanks for the advice. There's nothing controversial on my page, so I'm thinking I fly under the censorship radar. Hopefully...

If I ever get more serious than a hobby page, I may go that route. The prices on that type of access have really dropped in recent years.

Gab is an international platform. It's second biggest set of users is in Brazil. Today there is a Brazilian election and "Brazil's Trump" stands a good chance of winning. The Globo-Homo elite are very unhappy about this and asking "How did this happen?".
The answer, they believe, in part is Gab. Here's a quote from the Washington Post:
A few comments from the Gab thread on this were:
Gab is important. Gab is changing the whole world for the better. There will be increased attacks on Gab, trying to smear it and take it down. Love Gab, pray for Gab, ask God to protect Gab.
and
WaPo Infers: having just one uncensored media platform is enough to end Socialist rule in a country that has been leftist for 50 years. Corallary: for Socialism to remain a viable system in a democracy the means of communication must be heavily controlled and censored.
Axiom: Leftism Requires Censorship
It's pretty obvious that the current Soros/Obama regime (and yes, I know Trump's President, but lets face it the huge totalitarian machine is still being run by the same people as before, see: "Deep State Coup") is desperately trying to hang onto their power, and that free speech is like kryptonite to them.
That's really what this is all about.

“Still need a host though.”
anyone can host their own website and email ... all they need to do that is an internet connection and technical know-how ... FR is self-hosting for example ...
