"It all started with the tragic events in the United States, in the schools of the United States," Vladimir Putin told the Valdai discussion forum in Sochi in southern Russia.
As Russians struggle to come to terms with a horrific US-style school shooting in Crimea, which has left at least 20 people dead and dozens injured, Kremlin-controlled media are blaming the "corrupting influence" of the West for inspiring the attack.
This person was under the strong influence of Western subculture," said Sergey Mikheyev, a political analyst speaking on a nightly current-affairs show on Russian state television.
"Western subculture builds its matrix on the cult of violence. The one who has a weapon in his hands is right. This is a purely American approach to the matter," Mikheyev added.

I saw it, or at least one, and just sobbed.
A remembrance.

So you could say it's geographically, mostly Asia (the East) not Europe (the West.)
Demographically, by far most of their population is west of the Urals, and Slavic in race and language, but they comprise many, many small nationalities as well. For instance, my son Vanya was listed as Koryak by nationality, though te Koryak "nation" is less than 8,000 indigenous people in the Russian Far East.
My son's homeland is obviously Far East. What it is culturally is much more complicated.
Nope.
The reason St Petersburg was built was to be a "window on the west".
Russia is not east or west they are themselves.
And they will go along with the west if they perceive a gain and stick a spoke in our wheel if they see it might be to their advantage. Or just because it amuses them.
Ukraine is lucky the Russians didn’t blame them for this. It would be easy to do and it wouldn’t have turned out well for Porkychenko.
Two days now and no mention of it on the nightly news (ABC).
There are onion dome churches all over southern Germany. It’s not just a Russian thing.
But Russian church bells? Like no other sound on Earth, either love it or hate it. But it does have an eerie Eastern ring to it.
What makes Russians non-Western is their willingness to submit to a strongman’s leadership as long as he reassures them that things will be all right under his benevolent rule. First the Tsars, then Stalin, then Khrushchev & his successors, and now Putin. Same historical pattern.
If he was inspired by the west wouldn’t his pants be hanging below his buttocks?
Yes. Good catch.
Putin playbook - everything bad comes from outside, everything good comes from us. It works for a while but, as the saying goes, you can fool some of the people some of the time....
Today he is taking it to another level:
Aggressors Will Be Annihilated, We Will Go to Heaven as Martyrs,’ Putin Says
That means the KGB was just like American culture...and Stalin was there in spades...
Um, yeah. And the "Russian approach" is non-violence and cooperation, like Stalin practiced.
