NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Furious tenants of a public housing project in the Bronx were pleading for help Monday, saying their buildings are overrun with rats and theyre not kidding. They have the video to prove it.
But we should warn you, the pictures are not for the squeamish.
Im traumatized, tenant Veronica Martinez told CBS2s Marcia Kramer.
Youd be traumatized, too, if you had the same kitchen as Martinez.
Rats. An entire family of rats, some as big as cats, have taken over, hopping in the sink, into pots and pans. Its absolutely gut wrenching.
I should never have to experience not one but seven rats in my kitchen, Martinez said. Its disgusting. All over the stove, the washing machine, they just invaded my apartment.
And shes not the only tenant at the New York City Housing Authoritys Claremont Consolidated Houses in the Bronx who are ratting out the problem.
My wife can hardly sleep because you hear them in the walls, one tenant said.
Asia Clementes 1-year-old son was bitten by a rat. She wants Mayor Bill de Blasio to fix the problem.
If were paying you rent we deserve to live like human beings, not live like were savages, because were not, Clemente said.
What makes the situation worse is that garbage is left out in the courtyard and the residents say it breeds more rats.
Tenant Marilyn Veguilla took a picture of the garbage there on Monday morning. Of course, it was magically cleaned up before reporters arrived, but some of the opened trash cans remained.
I got small kids upstairs. Theres about four of us with asthma. We cant be dealing with this kind of condition, Veguilla said.
It was as if that family was living in a sewer, infested with rodents. I think were sick and tired of seeing the Housing Authority and the city at large treat NYCHA residents as second-class citizens, Bronx City Councilman Richie Torres said.
Bronx Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson said Mayor de Blasio should see the conditions first hand.
Come to Claremont Consolidated, Gibson said, and see how your residents, how our constituents, are living day to day. Its not acceptable. You wouldnt live like this.
NYCHA agreed, saying its now taking steps to deal with the problem.
Our residents should not have to live in these conditions. We apologize to our residents and will continue to vigilantly monitor this situation, a spokesperson said in a statement.
The agency said it intends to come up with a comprehensive plan that will include inspections and fixing unsafe conditions.
Can’t these numbnuts go down to the local hardware store and buy a few traps?? Then stop a the local deli and get some cheese (actually, peanut butter works better). WHAM! a few times.....problem solved.
I have a Maine Coon tomcat and if I see rats his size I am leaving...
Section 8 housing....................
It’s a public housing project-—not Section 8.
.
Rats don’t just show up. There has to be a food source and a way for them to get in. The getting in part should be handled by the NYCHA but the tenant is responsible for making sure there is not a food source. That kitchen did not look like much thought was given to cleanliness (I mean even if the rats were not there).
We battled an infestation after the yard next door was cleared after the house had been abandoned for a few months. The rats were not as bold as the ones in the video. In fact they were quick to run. Our dogs still caught quite a few. It makes me wonder how long the rats have been around to be so non-complacent about people being there.
Counter guy at a diner I sometimes go to says they are as big as “bunnies.” Funny, but not funny.
Use Tres Pasitos. Just tell everyone to be careful and keep their pets and children away from the stuff. This is an emergency.
Tres Pasitos.....illegal................
When the government is your housing landlord!!!
They need a whole lot of water every day even without that. One partial measure is clean up all the standing water and pipe leaks and fix the leaky faucets.
A pistol with rat shot makes some mighty entertaining hunting. . . oh . . . you can’t have guns in NYC. Guess you guys are just going to have to live with the rats.
Wrong. This is taxpayer-subsidized housing. The taxpayers don’t subsidize rent control.
They could also CLEAN their damned kitchens and dirty dishes with food all over for the damned things to eat YUCK these apartments are filthy GIVE ME A BREAK!!! These people are on public assistance and they cant even clean their house or wash their dishes!!!!
I know! But you can get it in Washington Heights.
The city can authorize use I’m sure if they try.
Also they can stop planting the goldarned ivy everywhere! In Verdi Park, the whole area that is not paved is planted with ivy, which the rats love with all their heart. They are running around like crazy as soon as nightfall comes.
Veronica Martinez, shut up and keep voting Democrat or else!
I tried to leave a comment on that site but it never posted.............
The agency said it intends to come up with a comprehensive plan that will include.......”Capturing, Preparing and Cooking Excess Urban Wildlife.” A good way to hire, train and employ more Democrat voters! Win win scenario!
If these apartments were rented to Asians, there would never be a problem
They want free housing but dont maintain it. Now they want free maintainence. They want FREE stuff, including free life
No one speaks louder than the ignorant. These are City Housing Projects. They have NOTHING to do with rent control.
The King of Rats is their Mayor
