Its incredible you got into Harvard especially with its racist admission policies!
I heard the sentiment of this impassioned exclamation all too frequently in the months following my acceptance. Everyone guilty of saying it meant well. They probably even believed that the last bit the one that never failed to provoke an internal grimace strengthened the compliment, elevating the gravity of my achievement. Of course, Id happily accept the praise if the sentiments fueling it didnt have the potential to harm other equally-deserving Harvard hopefuls. Unfortunately, that potential remains strong, more so now than ever. During this important political moment, I implore, from one Asian-American to another: Back off of affirmative action.

No. Admissions MUST not take into consideration certain factors: sex, race, age, skin color, religion, sex preference, presence or absence of original sex organs.
Consider only ability. Nothing else.
I have seen the system of indoctrination they put Asian kids through, in the Bay Area schools systems at least.
The (mostly white) teachers whip up race-hatred against white people. and try to sell the “intersectionality” bs, that of all “minorities” needing to unite against the white man.
Most of the Asian kids learn to parrot it back (the Asian ethic is to defer to authority), most recognize it as bs though, and go for technical/professional credentials as their parents desire.
But a few, like this, are brainwashed, as was intended.
I have a couple of white African American friends. Emigres from South Africa. They are damn glad to be here and strong Republicans.
fun to be in room of black folks and have the white person be the only real A-A
Actually, Asians are grade grinds who do nothing but study & later turn into tiger moms./s
Plus, “MadeInTaiwan”
Something a FReeper replied to me once here lol
Yeah, one of the Amicus Curiae briefs in the 1970s Bakke case was from Jewish organizations who said it would effectively impose quotas for Jewish applicants
The reality is, admissions committees are so scared and obsessed that race, gender, religion, heritage, and even politics now enterst their decisions. As close to a predetermined quota as possible.
And that can only mean highly qualified whites, Asians and Jews are systematically denied
Yeah I agree 100% Had one Harvard lawyer try and negotiate technical details of a networking contract on behalf of a customer. Lawyer didn’t know squat, you could tell that he was only spouting off about the latest buzz words that he read about last night. Thought his crap didn’t stink. After I showed that he didn’t know what he was talking about .... twice. Both times very publicly. I was not invited back to the negotiation table.
I believe that’s the perception at Harvard, but they try to admit the few who are interested in becoming Social Justice Warriors.
” I was tolerated:”
Maybe it was because you are ESL.
I have a friend who runs a division at an engineering / mechanical / aerospace firm. Decent size - about 5000 employees.
They will never hire a graduate from an Ivy League or top school. Same reasons you mentioned, but also: difficult to retain, they resent what they might consider "drudge" work or unsexy projects, especially as a new hire, and resist being formed to the culture of the company.
His view is - let 'em go fight for jobs at Google and Amazon.
I worked with them at a high tech IT company and I won’t hire a Harvard grad. MIT or RPI or Northeastern is another story
Funny, he also mentioned Northeastern. They also have a lot Case Western and Purdue grads
Shes the token Asian-American.
Re: Affirmative action:
“Equal rights and equal opportunity, however, mean just that. They do not mean preferential treatment. Preferences, no matter how well intended, ultimately breed resentment among the nonpreferred. And preferential treatment demeans achievements that minority Americans win by their own efforts.”
Colin Powell - My American Journey with Joseph E. Persico
The above, I think, is a proper understanding of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That Act required in its various sections that hiring and other decisions be made without regard to race or ethnicity. The goal was to include previously excluded racial or ethnic groups in the applicant pool.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 expressly rejected any statistical representation or quota. In fact, Vice President Humphrey, who steered the legislation through the Senate, noted that it “does not require an employee to achieve any kind of racial balance in his work force by giving any kind of preferential treatment to any individual or group.”
Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 703(j): “Nothing contained in this title shall be interpreted to require any employer, employment agency, labor organization, or joint labor-management committee subject to this title to grant preferential treatment to any individual or group because of the race, color, religion, sex or national origin of such individual group on account of an imbalance which may exist with respect to the total number or percentage of persons of any race, color, religion, sex, or national origin employed . . .”
Well, good luck with that. Administration agencies and courts were able to alter that and create policies never authorized by Congress and contrary to its plainly expressed legislative intent.
