Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

They hype storms to get folks to leave and for global warming politics and ratings

At the same time a hyped storm can be strong like this one

It’s not either or

This storm was Camille like...started same place and compact and fast

Not as much wind or surge thankfully...a late closer...what was it 155 northeast eye wall winds ....

What was max surge?

Anyone know the IKE on it yet?

And hit fairly low density population area

Although man it’s flat on that strip

Had this storm hit Mobile or Miami or Charleston it’s be Biblical

To those in its path it was big

Amazing from a purely meteorological perspective

Worst part is that is literally the last coastal old southern part of Florida left

Everything else is transplants and high rises

Even my old fav Boca Grande

I was shocked it’s now totally developed from Rotunda cutoff to the tip

Tyndall to Mexico and Cape San Blas and Port St joe to Applachicola ...oysters baby ...to St George and East Point to Carabelle to Alligator Point

That’s it...all that’s left of old Florida gulf coast

Well, she has limited finances so I don’t know if she can use Uber or a Taxi.

Yes, well, my friend does want me to be the one to take her and bring her home from her tooth extraction appointment. So, that’s what I will be doing. I just won’t be doing it early Thursday morning....that is the consensus.

THanks for your input, NN. She may have to suffer til Monday since I am not going to take her to her 8:30 AM appointment later today given the storm’s presence in my area then. And I can’t take her on Friday at 10 AM because I have an appointment for myself at that time (that was the other time they has open).

But I will give her the ideas shared with me on this thread about how to deal with the tooth pain until then.

Thanks for your ideas and for those of others.

OH - yes - I actually used oil of cloves (used a dropper to apply it) when I had wisdom teeth out and that helped immensely.

Thanks!

No one runs things any better in this state than Rick Scott those who doubt what strong storms can do just have not had the experience of being in one.The only reason there is not more damage than there is was because the forward speed prevented a catastrophe worse than it was.

Agree. Gov. Scott did an excellent job with preparation, staging assets before the storm made landfall and repeatedly warning folks to get out of the path of the storm.

Thus far, yes. There was extensive search and rescue occurring late yesterday in the hardest hit areas around Mexico Beach.

I agree with you both... in addition to the technical details of managing all of the preparation and recovery efforts, I feel that he strikes the perfect "tone" and demeanor when making his announcements...

It is hard to describe, but he seems to strike that perfect balance of being very serious about what is coming (or has just arrived), and not giving the impression of "hair on fire" panic...

Hopefully DeSantis will carry that forward.

Well, that’s a relief. Easily could have been much, much worse.

It seems some people want deaths in the 1000’s and entire towns leveled before they will acknowledge the fact.

If Michael has made landfall further to the west than PCB would have been damaged significantly and it would have made for a much bigger story. That’s no consolation to downtown Panama City, which was in the western eye wall for a couple of hours. The inland track took it over lightly populated panhandle counties, but that’s no consolation to Marianna Fla which apparently suffered bad damage as it was in the eyewall of a Cat 3-4 storm at that point.
