Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was strikingly at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his high-court confirmation.
The new justice dived into his new job, asking a handful of questions in the first arguments of the day following a traditional welcome from Chief Justice John Roberts, who wished Kavanaugh "a long and happy career in our common calling."
Kavanaugh took his seat at the end of the bench to Roberts' far left, a visible manifestation of a moment that Republicans have dreamed of for decades, with five solidly conservative justices on the court, and Democrats have dreaded.
His path to confirmation was turbulent opposition to him intensified after Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her decades ago, when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh denied it.
In court, Kavanaugh asked questions of both sides in arguments over increased prison sentences for repeat offenders. He jumped in with his first question after most of the other justices had spoken....

7-2 is really going to be sweet.
Kagan has volunteered to become the swing vote?
<<>>
Chameleon, contortionist Roberts is the swing vote.
>>Roberts will be the new swing vote. Hes not solidly Conservative no matter what the pundits say.
Maybe, but in spite of his idiotic ruling on the health care thing, I’d much rather have him in this position than Kennedy. Reagan’s appointments, except for Scalia, were really bad. Reagan and Bush 1 could have put 5 conservatives on the court yet only put 2.
I know John Paul Stevens said something like that. I can't find where Kennedy did.
The good part, with RBG nodding out, might only be til Christmas.
Thanks- I would expect that from Stevens, from Kennedy I’d be surprised.
Oh crap - you’re right - Stevens. I was trying to figure how why Kavanaugh would have still had Kennedy at the ceremony. I figured it was one of those polite and decent things to do - protocol and such. That makes me feel much better!
Thanks for the correction!
And then soon after Steven’s spouts off, Kagen and Soutemeyer gave some talk on how the “swing vote” was going away. Showing that as much as the court may say that they aren’t partisan - they kinda sort-of are.
The job of a judge is to listen to the case.
This is best done while keeping your mouth shut. Otherwise you are thinking about what you are going to say rather then truly listening.
Whew! Glad that’s cleared up. It’s tough remembering who said this or that at times:)
Thanks!
Aww, Justice Kav will just turn his younger daughter loose on that caferteria stuff! She'll love it, and liven it up a bit. "Prune juice, Daddy? Why not Mtn Dew? Then that old lady won't keep falling asleep"!
Maybe she initiates all the newbies with a weekend of incredible sex...
I doubt it would be the loudest such noise to come from her chair.
FDR tried something like that. It backfired on Frankie, if I recall.....
Exactly. Why is a liberal never the swing vote?
I read that Kennedy insisted Trump nominate Kavanugh as his replacement.
the RATS are already talking about it if they regain power
I don't think that is true. At the White House swearing-in ceremony, the President thanked him profusely and referred to "all the hard work", or words to that effect. It would appear that Justice Kennedy took his advice directly to the top of the Executive Branch, and probably also advised the top tier of the Legislative Branch such as McConnell and Grassley. I think he was entirely correct in not going to the gutters of the MSM, regardless of whether he is now a private citizen. The court should be a highly respected and very discreet society, even when members are emeriti.
