No Columbus Day in Columbus, Ohio: What the city is doing instead
CBS "News" ^ | October 8, 2018

The largest city named for Christopher Columbus has called off its observance of the divisive holiday that honors the explorer, making a savvy move to tie the switch to a politically safe demographic: veterans. Ohio's capital city, population 860,000, will be open for business Monday after observing Columbus Day probably "for as long as it had been in existence," said Robin Davis, a spokeswoman for Democratic Mayor Andrew Ginther.

City offices will close instead on Veterans Day, which falls on Nov. 12 this year.

Native Americans and allied groups have long used Columbus Day to elevate issues of concern to them. That includes a peaceful protest of prayers, speeches and traditional singing in 2016 at Columbus City Hall — underneath the statue of the explorer that sits out front — to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline and to urge Ohio to support more renewable energy.

The decision to stop observing the holiday was not triggered by the national movement to abolish Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day as a way of recognizing victims of colonialism, Davis said.

As an American of Italian Ancestry I must ask the question, why do the People of Columbus Ohio hate me?

Where do I go to get my Ancestry back?

Democratic Mayor Andrew Ginther . . . That says a lot. Neither he nor any of his politically correct jackasses would have even one ounce of the guts it took to get on those small ships and sail across an unknown body of water. What a bunch of chicken$hit morons!

“Divisive” for the lunatic left that is.

So the Niña, Pinta, or Santa Maria, never landed near the shores of the United States?

Hispanics, many the offspring of the Spaniards, are heralded with a reference just short of a group canonized by God, but another Spaniard who came to our shores, is now stricken from history as an evil man?

Columbus should change it’s name. I don’t think he’d want it disgraced by the city.

Change the name of the city, hypocrites! How about Indigenous Peoples’ $hithole?

They hate Columbus because he brought Christianity to the continent.

“Indigenous Peoples Day”

How racist is that? It ignores the accomplishments of the aliens who originally brought us humans here. The name is a sure case of anti alienism. Discriminate much?

Wow. Those reasons sound really subversive to me (Sarc)

Matt Walsh:The only thing you can do with someone who accuses Columbus of “bringing” slavery and genocide to the New World is laugh at them. Slavery and mass ritualistic, sometimes cannibalistic, slaughters were commonplace among Indian tribes way before Columbus showed up.

That's true. There were primitive wars where entire populations were wiped out, and none of them had anything to do with those eeeevil white European explorers.

A fun thing to do is to remind those who hate Cristoforo Colombo why he sailed all that way over here in the first place. Something about Islamic tyrants (Muslim extremists?) throttling trade access to the far East?

Also in the article: “...Veterans Day, which falls on Nov. 12 this year...”

Dear ColumDumbass,

Veterans’ Day is Armistice Day, renamed to celebrate all Veterans.

Armistice Day celebrates the Armistice that ended WWI. It happened “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” in 1918.

It does NOT fall on November 12, never has, never will.

#3 The new Minnesota St Paul mayor cancelled July 4 fireworks.
He said it cost too much. Meanwhile he hired several friends with salaries over $100,000 in no show jobs.

If Europeans had not come to the new world, would the Aztecs still be sacrificing humans on top of their pyramids? Imagine Mexico City with a blood covered pyramid in 2018, with the Liberals claiming that all cultures are equal.

Well, at least President Trump is still celebrating it: "Christopher Columbus’s spirit of determination & adventure has provided inspiration to generations of Americans. On #ColumbusDay, we honor his remarkable accomplishments as a navigator, & celebrate his voyage into the unknown expanse of the Atlantic Ocean."

And his proclamation: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/presidential-proclamation-columbus-day-2018/

It still occurs on November 11th, the federal government also recognizes a weekday as paid holiday for government workers. THAT SHOULD STOP!
