Trump drops civil tone, slams Kavanaugh accuser credibility

WASHINGTON (AP) — Abandoning his previous restraint, President Donald Trump challenged by name the woman accusing his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault on Friday, declaring that if the alleged attack was so terrible she would have reported it to law enforcement.

Trump’s change in tone — and apparent shift in tactics — came as Christine Blasey Ford’s lawyers negotiate with the Senate Judiciary Committee on the terms for her possible testimony next week in a dramatic showdown over her accusation that threatens Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Trump tweeted: “I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!”

The president previously had avoided naming Ford or plainly casting doubt on her account. Ford alleges Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her more than 30 years ago when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation.

Polls can be construed to give whatever result the polling body wishes, election or otherwise...

Do you really trust in polls and believe they are all honest???

... but because many victims of sexual assault do not file charges.

Feminist nonsense.

This is all theater. The timing of these events was obvious from the beginning. Dems want to delay, delay, delay. POTUS is calling time on this nonsense. Kavanaugh is main line GOP and Grassley/McConnell is failing miserable pulling his behind over the finish line in a timely manner.

I’m sure POTUS will be happy to make another SCOTUS MAGA pick should the GOPe not finish their job.

I’m not sure it is the “ideals” they prefer...I believe they really prefer to sit back and enjoy the perks and graft that their position gives them and are able to say, “We can’t do anything...They have the majority or the power...”

That’s why winning the WH , Senate, AND House has so many so-called republicans nervous...They don’t have the “majority” excuse any longer....

The accuser isn’t being civil. She is lying and making disgusting claims.

In fact I will go further.

There are many more (filings/reporting of rape and sexual assault(lying)) than there is of actual rape and sexual assault. Not even close.

What the Dems are really trying to do is dissuade future potential SCOTUS nominees from wanting the job.

I think POTUS is doing the right thing, showing the p*ssy hat hag crowd and the Rat media that he backs his nominee and isn’t afraid of them.

He is drawing direct fire onto himself away from Kavanagh, that’s what a good leader and a hero does.

POTUS is demonstrating courage, and hopefully that will help our spineless GOP senators to also show courage.

Oh she is lying about Kavanaugh. That I have never questioned.

So the two sides are playing poker with each other and the world's best negotiator walks in and flips a chip on the table betting on red. Blue's move...

Trump just rattled everyone's cage.

You see normal linear negotiations work towards a Nash equilibrium. Trump's role is to upset those kinds of deals when there is a far better deal to be had (NK, Iran,....)

If Trump wanted a gloves off approach that should have come at the very start of her allegations. Before support for her allegations had a chance to grow and before any doubts about Kavanuagh’s confirmation could be planted in the minds of Republicans. By changing his approach I think he takes away focus on Kavanaugh’s qualifications and on Ford.

There are a number of people who honestly do not care about the truth of her allegations. They only care that the allegations were made. They believe the truth does not matter. What matters is that a person accused of such a thing not be confirmed to the USSC. To them it does not matter if he is innocent and his reputation and career left in tatters because he would not be going to jail. To them support for victims of sexual assault trumps the truth. That is the scary times we live in. Due process be damned. The woman must be believed, at any cost.

I will agree, Ford probably would take up a whole new chapter in the DSM-5.

Every milquetoast that claims this will backfire has said the same thing since Trump declared he was running for president.

I’m tired of the cowards. They’re no better than the liberals that want to shut him up.

I agree. My concern is with this giving Republicans a reason to support further delays.

It’s not feminist nonsense. But Ford supposedly did not tell anyone at all for 30+ years. That I seriously doubt.

The polls matter to those inside the Beltway. Just two Reps have to be turned to kill the confirmation. And the longer this goes on, the more dirty tricks can be played. All we need is one or two more women to come forward making similar allegations. They won't be true, but it will the seriousness of the charge that will count.

Is anyone outside the Beltway and New York City media even covering this anymore?

The people inside the Beltway will make the decision. If this woman ever shows up for the hearing, it will be a ratings buster. It is just another version of reality TV. The hearing room will be stacked with Ford supporters. It will be a circus with the Dems going after Kavanaugh like the hammers of Hell while the Reps will show great deference and sensitivity towards Ford. What will the perception of the public be afterwards? And we know how the MSM will cover it.

More concessions by Grassley will be a major mistake and possibly torpedo confirmation. Grassley needs to move this forward now and assert his control over the process. Waiting until Thursday would signal surrender.

I’m concerned that you are right. This could generate a lot more female support for Ford.

He is ONE OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I support President Trump enthusiastically. Doesn't mean I agree with everything he tweets.

He's infallible just like the rest of us. In over 17 years here, I've amassed over 28,000 posts. I'm sure there's at least a hundred or so, maybe more, that I wish I could take back.

It happens. I'm not going to lose much sleep over this. It'll be inconsequential in the end.

This is why Trump is a multi-billionaire whose photo appears in the dictionary under the definition of "WINNER", and you're not.

The gloves-off approach would have been a terrible political move to make. It's far better to let your opponents (and I would include Ford, her lawyers, and the Senate Democrats in this group) spend 3-4 days making complete @sses of themselves first.

Once the reports came out last night about the utterly ridiculous "demands" being made by Ford's lawyers, that's when the gloves came off. In boxing terms, it's much easier to pummel the sh!t out of an opponent who has been flailing away for two minutes of Round 1, and is now standing there in the ring so exposed that he's basically asking the judge to shorten the first round from three minutes to two.

Trump is being sarcastic. I grew up in the NYC area. This is the way we talk when trying to show how stupid this entire episode is. The Emperor has no clothes. The very fact that this last minute ploy is being treated as legitimate is a reflection of how insane we have all become.

It is just another manufactured Dem crisis like Russian collusion. Or that people can change their gender. Or that Islam is the religion of peace. We have all become enablers. Trump tweets the obvious and many are frightened by the possible reaction of the Dems, as though they needed a pretext to do anything.

Not possible. POTUS has very little influence on the GOP Senate. They do what they want. Stinking piles of garbage Senate omnibus funding bills, obamacare non-repeal, no border money, etc.
