Trump court nominee's accuser has not agreed to testify: senator

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican U.S. Senate committee chairman said on Tuesday the woman who has accused President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault decades ago has not yet agreed to appear at a public hearing planned for Monday.

Senator Chuck Grassley said Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor in California whose allegations have put Kavanaugh’s once-safe nomination in serious jeopardy, has not responded to attempts by the Judiciary Committee, which oversees the confirmation process, to contact her.

The hearing represents a potential make-or-break moment for the conservative federal appeals court judge’s confirmation chances for the lifetime post on the top U.S. court, as Trump seeks to continue his goal of moving the federal judiciary to the right. Kavanaugh, who has denied the assault allegation, met with officials at the White House on Tuesday for a second straight day.

“We have reached out to her in the last 36 hours, three or four times by email, and we’ve not heard from them. So it kind of raises the question ... do they want to come to (the) public hearing or not?” Grassley said in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

It’s important to remember that these allegations were against an anonymous man in 2012. It basically came with a fill in the blank name attached. That name wasn’t attached until now. So these are not six-year-old allegations against him. She said six years ago that this happened but didn’t name anybody. Now that Kavanaugh’s running she’s applying a name to her story. And her husband’s heresay testimony is that she named him back then, except the analysts notes don’t corroberate it.

What Kavanaugh did for 3 days is demanding and grueling. Only someone with his intelligence and poise can pull that off.

That being said, I can understand her trepidation in coming forward. I’m guessing she started trying to do the right thing, got caught up with Katz and the politics took over. They played her and now she is in too deep.

But her attorney and the Democrats won’t be answering the Committee questions; she will.

If she gets cold feet; Democrats will try to stall for some more time.

If she testifies, she will likely flounder, easing Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

My guess - she will not testify and the Democrats will scream to postpone. I think the GOP will stay strong on this one and have the vote.

If Flake and the other retiring RINO votes “NO”, it will go to the full Senate anyways. If it loses there - it will be a huge reason for Republicans to vote in November to grow Senate and maybe even keep the House. Unfortunate, but a huge motivator!

Let’s hope the GOP holds and confirms. If not, what a shame for an honorable Jurist. Why the hell would anyone want to be in the spotlight for this blood lust?

I would not subpoena her. Grassley has made the hearing available to her. If you subpoena her you look like you are bullying here in a way to some and at this point you don’t need too.

Grassley should then say we offered to allow her to be heard and corroborate her story and she declined to be heard, therefore we have to assume as the FBI, did there is no there-there. We will vote this nomination out of committee immediately and do it.

I agree 100% with your post which is well worth repeating.

I think that’s exactly what he’s doing, and—just like letting the protesters make asses out of themselves during the hearings—it will reflect badly on the Demonrats, not the Pubs.

I have a sneaking suspicion she is such a nutcase (Pussy hat wearing, reviews from students) that the Dems do not want her to embarass them.

Also there is a rumor floating around on Twitter that she sent a similar accusation against Gorsuch?

Bet someone told her she would have to answer questions from Ted Cruz. Only a stupid person would volunteer for that if they were lying.

This woman did not want to be in the public eye. The Democrats put her there. Once they have mentally and emotionally raped her, they will toss her aside like last weeks newspaper. You can count on it.

I always understood that “the burden of proof was on the prosecution”. They can put up or shut up. An accusation is only that until it is proved.

Rush just mentioned the Gorsuch letter right before he closed for the day. Said it had a ring of truth to it.

You missed the part where he hostile “led” the one witness at Ft Marcy Park, Patrick I think Knowlton, throwing him off guard and accusing him of being there for sex hookups instead of to take a leak. Kavanaugh helped the Clintons avoid a murder charge at all with Kavanaugh on that team. He lied in that questioning and set up Knowlton. I haven’t liked Kavanaugh since finding that out. Many people were sent to their deaths after that, maybe because the Clintons’ first convenient suicide was so easy. How many would still be alive if they had had to at least put on a defense at a murder trial?

I still want him confirmed. But I’d like to know why he did what he did, and what he got for it.

Wow - right out of Orwell - drop anonymous charges, when exposed refuse to back up what you said and still expect to have your charges be taken seriously - complain that you’re too delicate to face a public hearing about your charges, and care not a wit about the feelings and reputation of the person accused - what’s that the Constitution said about your right to face your accuser - but then ‘rats don’t believe in the Constitution anyhow, so why would they want to comply with what it prescribes - on the other hand, why should they be allowed to help chose judges who will be safeguarding it when they don’t want to comply with it.....

If I were Grassley, I would have made room in the schedule for Ford to testify tomorrow, then held the vote to confirm Kavanaugh on Thursday, as scheduled.

The Dems would have screamed for more time, but I would have countered with, “If these charges are as serious as Democrats claim, they could have easily had Mrs Ford in these chambers within 24 hours. Request denied.”

Bingo! She must have thought that she would get the Hillary Clinton treatment.

This blood lust demonstrated by the Dems so often is a way of keeping good people from ever running as a Republican, especially taking an office in the Trump Administration. Dem leaders are evil bullies.
