Climate change is making hurricanes way more intense
NY Post ^ | Sept. 17, 2018 | AP

A warmer world makes for nastier hurricanes. Scientists say they are wetter, possess more energy and intensify faster.

Their storm surges are more destructive because climate change has already made the seas rise. And lately, the storms seem to be stalling more often and thus dumping more rain.

Study after study shows that climate change, in general, makes hurricanes worse. But determining the role of global warming in a specific storm such as Hurricane Florence or Typhoon Mangkhut is not so simple — at least not without detailed statistical and computer analyses.

The “computer models” can’t predict weather accurately just 48 hours ahead. But we are to believe their long term predictions.

Weather forecasting is similar to stock market forecasting. Can’t be done because the variables are too many, and there are not enough real time data points.

1928 –
The Okeechobee Hurricane strikes southeastern Florida, killing upwards of 2,500 people.
It is the third deadliest natural disaster in US history, behind the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

My question, then, is; why were they so intense in the past?

Ironic that a week or so ago, an article on Weather Underground said warming would cause more shear winds that would reduce the strength of hurricanes....

Not so much but if they keep repeating the lie it becomes the truth.

You mean like “Tropical Storm Florence” (possible cat 6 hurricane becomes a tropical storm at landfall)

You mean THAT KIND of “strengthening?

Cat 1 can put your power our and do a little damage in places. ALL wind speeds in hurricanes are measured by the strongest in a SMALL area around the eye. The entire storm area is not blowing at 100-140mph.

Used to be they didn't even NAME anything without a closed circulation. Now a semi rband of thunderstorms containing a few blasts of strong eind gets a name. Then they track it till it hits Great Britain!
I'm not dismissing Florence. It wasn't as bad as the NWS wanted it to be, but bad enough to flood people out. BUT they had hyped up warnings for almost a week! They were wrong about wind but-and it hurts to say- right about rain and flooding. It's the hype people remember. Its the hype that makes people stay and not evacuate because previous hyped up storms weren't 'monsters' so all will be the same. They won't.Words mean things. And reporters holding onto street signs while someone is hosing them and throwing lawn furniture-contradicting why those affected SEE outside cause the complacency and subsequent deaths.

Atlantic Islands!
BINGO! That's the problem. The U.S. is IN THE WAY! If not, all hurricanes would be in the Pacific! If the US hadn't been colonized by evil Europeans and built up the hurricanes that do hit wouldn't hurt anything but trees! Maybe we should try to make the planet rotate in the other direction-sending hurricanes TO Africa. Wait-no-then the typhoons would hit here. Darn, guess we gotta do something about the Sun.That's what causes Global Warming.

They compared the potential for water damage to hurricane Harvey, 15 inches to 51 inches. Harvey dumped trillions of gallons of rain. A year’s rainfall inside a couple of days.

Media hyperbole for ratings and to sell a false narrative about Trump and man made global warming.

Concern for those who lost life and property by the event was blown way out of proportion.
