The NFL season has gotten off to a rough start in primetime, with Thursday Night Football ratings the latest to drop.
The Week 2 Ravens-Bengals Thursday Night Football game had a 4.2 rating and 7.02 million viewers on NFL Network, down 14% in ratings and 13% in viewership from last year (Texans-Bengals: 4.9, 8.08M). Compared to NFL Networks first exclusive game in 2016, Dolphins-Bengals in Week 4, ratings fell 13% (from 4.8) and viewership 11% (from 7.90M).
Not including over-the-air simulcasts, the Bengals win was NFL Networks least-watched season opener since 2014 when the network did not make its season-debut until Week 8 (Saints-Panthers: 6.88M)
All five primetime NFL games this season have declined from last year. The two Thursday night games have posted the steepest declines, with the previous weeks Falcons-Eagles NFL Kickoff also down double-digits. By contrast, all three afternoon windows have increased.
In the key young demographics, Thursdays ratings declined 15% in adults 18-49 (from 3.1 to 2.6), 16% in adults 18-34 (from 2.4 to 2.05) and 17% in adults 25-54 (from 3.5 to 2.9).
According to Sports Business Journal writer John Ourand, viewership on The Weather Channel Thursday night was up 64 percent from last year due to the landfalling Hurricane Florence.
They obviously need more kneeling.
And bringing Kaepernick back isn’t a bad idea.
And refs don’t get enough face time. More flags wouldn’t hurt.
Is there a “fantasy ref league” yet? Pick the ref team that gives the most penalty yards and the most minutes of review per game - since that’s why we watch. Maybe they can combine refs and kneelers into a fantasy league - get points for kneels and flags. If your ref kneels you win the week. I’ll be on the edge of my seat for 5+ hours/game hoping “my ref” throws a flag every play even if the game is a blowout. And the halftime show of “the 10 ten yellow flags today” will keep me from going to the fridge for a beer.

He's got nothing on the Ford Family in Detroit.
Fitzmagic!
No, they damaged Hollywood, the cinema, magazines, newspapers and television!
They sought to destroy our values, and we stopped listening.
If you’re going to have female refs, put them in bikinis.
“This is now my third year on no NFL.
I dont even miss it anymore.”
Me too. Every now and then I will tune in and watch a game for a bit. But, after about 5 minutes, I remember why I stopped watching.
I check scores and that’s it. Can’t even sit through college games anymore they are way too long.
I’m spoiled by soccer, because there are no breaks during the game.
I’ve been boycotting the NFL way before it was cool. LOL
boycotting third year after watching 60.
Back when the Skins played in RFK there was a waiting list. Not so since they moved to FedEx Field. Of course a decade of mediocrity may have something to do with that too.
Bought my daughter a Mahomes Jersey last March for her birthday. Shes up in sea chicken country. I thought it was pretty awesome that he showed up to support mens basketball during their run last year.
Buddy of mine did just that. Sent in a postcard in Jr. High, got his name on the list. We were in our mid-30s when they finally offered him the chance to buy tickets.
He took them up on it, and still does. Picks a game or two that he wants to see, then sells off the rest to cover costs. He's not the die-hard fan that he used to be. He figures, "Meh, what the heck, I can go hang out with the kid for a couple of afternoons, more-or-less for free."
I guess that they're decent seats, there's still a demand for them. Or, at least he's able to put them up on Stubhub or whatever and they sell.
I didn’t watch my KC Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. I had to learn about it when my aunt from Pittsburgh called to tell me about the Steeler’s loss. Did I miss anything important? SI says KC’s new QB is the cat’s meow. Well OK then. I still wont watch.
I can take the college games, that is all I am interested in football-wise nowadays. As long as the game is good, and not a blowout...
Good point. The Ford family didn’t immediately come to mind.
That picture probably shows pre-game or an exhibition game.
BTAIM they are taking ratings from Bengal games? The Bengals???
I was the same way with my Bucs vs Igles! I didn't watch and it must have been a good game. The Buc won! That said:
BOYCOTT THE NFL!!!
That pic is 6 mins into the first quarter of yesterdays game. They guy who tweeted it had season tickets for 20 years - he said hes never seen the stadium that empty.
Zoom into FEDEX on the stadium and youll see the clock - Qtr 1 is to the right.
