Harvard Prof: Merit-based admissions 'reproduce inequality'

Professor Natasha Warikoo claims that white students "reluctantly agree with affirmative action as long as it benefits them”

She's displeased that students she interviewed are motivated by "self-interest" instead of social justice

A Harvard University professor claims in a new academic study that merit-based admission processes at elite universities “reproduce inequality.”

Harvard education professor Natasha Warikoo draws on interviews with 98 white, native-born students at Harvard, Brown University, and the University of Oxford in “What Meritocracy Means to its Winners: Admissions, Race, and Inequality,” published in the journal Social Sciences.

White students “stand in fear of being labeled a racist, but they are quick to call foul should a diversity program appear at all to hamper their own chances for advancement,” Warikoo claims in that book.

During interviews Warikoo conducted between 2009 and 2011, these students were asked to sound-off on whether they felt their school had meritocratic admissions and if they supported affirmative action. Many answered the second question affirmatively and hailed the benefits of a diverse student body.

But Warikoo seems concerned with students’ responses. Analyzing data from these interviews years later, Warikoo points out that students’ approaches to diversity suggest that they’ve “internalized” the tokenistic rhetoric of the school admissions office, even if they had disagreed with policies like athletic recruitment or legacy admissions before coming to campus.

A Harvard professor thinks people with 85 IQ become intellectually equal with other Harvard students if they are awarded admission and, I suppose, grades?

I do think some special consideration should be given to those students who come from poverty and adversity.

Not sure what you mean by special consideration.

I am of the opinion that all admissions should be on the basis of merit. Make the grades of stay home.

Financial assistance for “those students who come from poverty and adversity” I can agree with if funded privately.

By natasha warikoo admitting the white student’s “intelligence advantage” she is disparaging students of color.

Nothing new here...
The inadequate always strive to pull normals down to their level, usually by governmental rent-seeking, but increasingly through mindless animal physical violence, or its threat.

This country would still be grinding corn by hand & harvesting wheat by hand in sheaves if it wasn’t for the ‘self interest’ of people like John Deere & Cyrus McCormick.

And would be much less populous.

Her middle name is Kumar, so I’m betting she’s some sort of Indian transplant!

Affirmative Action - Created by white people to punish white people (except for their own family members) in a effort to get black votes.

Of course it reproduces inequality. The world is unequal. Get used to it.

Those who are more talented go to college. They meet talented people of the opposite sex, marry them and produce more talented people. Thank God for that. If it weren't for the talented people, we'd still be living in caves and wearing bear skins to keep warm.

Yes, God loves the untalented, and Christ died for the untalented, just as much as for the talented. Nevertheless, the untalented should be glad for the existence of the talented, even if it means that the talented do better in life than the untalented. Without the talented, the untalented would be even worse off than they are now.

SO...in the view of this libturd ‘professor’, raising the intellectual water level in the ocean of academia breeds inequality?

I suppose that’s true...IF your focus is on equality of outcome in all things.

Prof needs to get out of the classroom, forever.

Last I checked, this is 2018. So it took her SEVEN years to write that stupid paper? (After spending THREE years doing a couple of interviews.) Harvard isn't getting its money worth from this lazy slacker!

Turning down immigrants who can contribute to society while letting in those who will live off the welfare system and not work is going to cause inequality?

Equality is for France. America is about freedom. You are free to work hard and succeed or goof off lazily and fail. If you choose to be a lazy goof off, you don’t get to have an outcome equal to those who work hard. Now, if you are just dumb with a low IQ but you work your butt off, all I can say is “life is unfair”. You still don’t get to have an outcome equal to the hard worker with the high IQ. Go find something else to do where hard work is rewarded without using tremendous brain power.

Life is unfair. Deal with it. We shouldn’t make it more unfair by favoring one group over another.

Society itself is harmed when you graduate underperformers and label them as top performers. Then they are put in professional positions where they fail their customers, clients, patients and themselves. It a horrible travesty.

How can this white woman therefore suggest it right that she is taking a lofty Ivy League perch from some surely more appropriate and “deserving” academic who is an actual underrepresented racial minority?
