The Department of Housing and Urban Development hit Facebook Inc. with an administrative complaint alleging the social media company’s advertising tools enable those managing property to discriminate in housing.

Filed on Aug. 14, HUD’s administrative complaint alleges that both the social media company’s ad targeting tools and user classification enable the limitation of ad audiences on characteristics “outright prohibited” by the Federal Housing Administration, said the government’s formal statement of interest. Among the grounds on which Facebook is alleged to have allowed discrimination are “sex, religion, familial status, and natural origin, and pretexts for protected characteristics.”

Are social media companies publishers responsible for what they publish, or are they mere platforms to facilitate other people to publish? They can't be both.

Yep.

This could get very interesting.

And I wasn’t actually sure Ben Carson was going to work everyday.

The complaint is poorly advised.

At the moment I am inclined to believe anything that hurts FaceBook is good for America. I hope someone files a similar suit against Google/Youtube.

“The complaint is poorly advised.”

How so? The Truth in Lending act requires no discrimination or redlining in real estate advertisements.

Facebook is selectively directing the ads to certain people instead of the entirety of the market.

Error in my prior post. it’s the Fair Housing Act, not Truth in Lending.

“...allowed...” ?

This is ridiculous for HUD to be taking such a case.

It does remind Facebook that it is loosing friends and looks like a shot across the bow.

There are Anti-Trust considerations which I had hoped DoJ would consider.

Please understand.

The implications of this compliant and if successful, are HUGE.

It’s so much more than being about real estate and Fair lending etc.

I’m loving it.

What do you think about the above? Here's another version of the story: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/aug/17/feds-accuse-facebook-discrimination-over-ad-target/

I listened to https://www.washingtontimes.com/staff/cheryl-k-chumley/ on C-Span radio on the way home. I have to admit her case against the social media companies was quite compelling.

Her idea is here: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/aug/9/title-vii-solution-social-media-censorship/ What do think of that idea? I am intrigued by it. Not sure what it would do, effectively. Or what the drawbacks of even this incremental step might be.

Look at the bigger picture.

the social media company’s ad targeting tools and user classification enable the limitation of ad audiences on characteristics “outright prohibited” by the ...

That is a good point because the their ad targetting is opaque and a story from two years ago: “Facebook Lets Advertisers Exclude Users by Race”. Still requires a way to police and penalize them.

Administrative complaint, my ass—they should be fined for everything they’re worth and thrown in jail. This is a very clear-cut and diabolical conspiracy to deprive rightly protected classes of their access to housing. It is utterly unconscionable, and an extremely scary example of what can be done to us with this kind of technology. These people should never be allowed within range of an electronic device again. Seriously, they need to go after this full tide, with a massive legal and public relations blitz. Take control of the paradigm.

Charged by each and every occurrence? How many people didn’t see the ad every day for a year times 10K?

We need arrest and trial of all members of the boards of directors without further delay. This is conspiracy and aiding and abetting a federal crime.
