Nine members of the same family are among the 17 people who died on Thursday night when a duck boat capsized in a Missouri lake.
The family were from Indianapolis, but have not yet been named. Two other members of the family, who were also on the boat, survived.
Bill Asher and his girlfriend Rose Hamman were also identified as among the dead by friends on Facebook on Friday afternoon.
Bill and Rose had been on a week-long holiday in Branson, and had spent their last evening away on the duck boat, friend Mary Ogborn Kientzy said.
Family confirmed the death of grandmother Leslie Dennison, who had been on the boat with her 12-year-old granddaughter Alicia, via Facebook.
Her son Todd told the Kansas City Star on Thursday his daughter, who is recovering in hospital, said she could feel Leslie pushing her up as the boat filled with water.
'She said her grandmother saved her,' he told the paper. Leslie is being mourned as a 'true hero'.
Another five people were killed in the tragic accident, including Robert 'Bob' Williams, 66, who was driving the boat when it went down in Table Rock Lake in Branson.

Hope they recover the dukw. I’d be interested in what they had for bilge pumps, if the pumps work and the shape of the hull seals. If it went out pulling in water and using the pumps to go out. A seal failure or pump failure along with the rough water is a bad deal. Lots to learn from that sunken boat. Hope they recover it. Wonder how deep of water it’s in?
Eisenhower postponed the Normandy Invasion due to rough weather/sea. 60 mph is very rough.
We were on a Duck on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. It was really cool. I was on the last seat at the rear just in case. The water line is very narrow as opposed to a regular boat.
The Branson Belle is a very large excursion boat with onboard dinner and entertainment while cruising the lake, and owned by a different company.
It does appear they were docked and watching in horror as this unfolded.
I think some people literally jumped off the boat to help people in the water.
I heard, on Fox earlier, that they had been told by captain/driver there was no need to put on life preservers :(
I’ve been on a Duck boat, but it was not enclosed. It was open air. Not that that would help some of the folks in the middle of the boat....but, much better than enclosed.
I’m sure the Coast Guard will investigate. The Insurance companies will sue and the owner will cya. If the FAA was doing the investigation we’d know what, who, and why. The when is already established. It’s a lousy way to meet reality.
NTSB is investigating.
Mechanically, a lot of them are newer than you think. The only “original parts” on these tend to be the hull.
Saying the weather suddenly came up, upon them, is not holding true....
In the Branson duck boat incident, Reuters reports that National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Linderberg stated, “we had a line of very strong thunderstorms that caused 74 mph winds here in Springfield.” The Reuters article also states that 63 mph winds were reported at the Branson airport near the time of the incident.

I had never heard of a duck boat and still don’t know what one is.
Some times trying to rush to shore puts you in a crosswind position or a following wave pattern. Nose to the wind may be more stable and take on less water but you have to be there to know exactly what the boat driver was seeing. Take on enough water and you lose the ability to steer. Riding it out or looking for shelter is a very tough call. The roll call of lost ships and boats is very long. Andrea Gale and Edmund Fitzgerald come to mind for two. Very sad.

Actually, the DUKW before it was accepted into military service was used to rescue stranded sailors off Provincetown on 1 Dec 1942. Four days later they were used in a demonstration exercise in 10ft surf to ferry troops and equipment from ship to shore.

Lots of room for operator error in very bad conditions. If the boat is sound that points to a mistake by driver. My method is nose to the wind with enough power to keep it there and try to ride it out. If I can get to a sheltered area fine. Never tried to run for it. So far it has worked but I ain’t discounting luck and the all mighty. I’ve also never had 30 other people on board.
You may be a champion swimmer, but most folks aren't. Besides, it's the law -- especially on overloaded DUKWs.
