Actually, the DUKW before it was accepted into military service was used to rescue stranded sailors off Provincetown on 1 Dec 1942. Four days later they were used in a demonstration exercise in 10ft surf to ferry troops and equipment from ship to shore.

Lots of room for operator error in very bad conditions. If the boat is sound that points to a mistake by driver. My method is nose to the wind with enough power to keep it there and try to ride it out. If I can get to a sheltered area fine. Never tried to run for it. So far it has worked but I ain’t discounting luck and the all mighty. I’ve also never had 30 other people on board.
