Some times trying to rush to shore puts you in a crosswind position or a following wave pattern. Nose to the wind may be more stable and take on less water but you have to be there to know exactly what the boat driver was seeing. Take on enough water and you lose the ability to steer. Riding it out or looking for shelter is a very tough call. The roll call of lost ships and boats is very long. Andrea Gale and Edmund Fitzgerald come to mind for two. Very sad.
