Slovakia will open a cultural embassy in Jerusalem for now. But that appears to be a prelude to a larger move.
Slovakia is on its way to relocating its embassy to Jerusalem, Head of the Slovak National Council Andrej Danko told Israels President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the visiting delegation of Slovak lawmakers announced the Eastern European country would open a cultural center in the Israeli capital.
The move, when it materializes, would mark a break from European Union policy on Jerusalem. Slovakia would join the Czech Republic and Bulgaria as the other European Union member states to expand their diplomatic presence in the city since US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israels capital.
There is a groundswell in Eastern Europe and South America. Those are also the regions where Israeli diplomatic outreach has been at its most effective over the years.
In June, Bulgarian prime minister Boyko Borisov visited Israel and while visiting Jerusalem, told Benjamin Netanyahu that he appreciated Israels desire for the international community to recognize Jerusalems status as Israels capital, adding that he would seek to move his own countrys embassy to the eternal capital of the Jerusalem.
Slovakian Prime Minister Peter Pellegrinis decision was reached after Speaker of the Israeli Knesset Yuli Edelstein called on Slovakia to follow their neighbors from Czech Republic in committing themselves to Jerusalem by opening an honorary consulate in the city.

Imagine locating an embassy in a nation’s capital. What a novel idea.
Oh no...the muzzie loving EU will be upset...to which I say, ‘GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
Yes, in the ancient nation’s capital. But the so called “Palestinians” deny the reality of that.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly... told Abbas he has two months to either accept the Saudi proposal or leave office to make way for a new Palestinian leader... It reportedly proposes the establishment of limited Palestinian sovereignty over small portions of Judea and Samaria. The Gaza Strip, over which the Palestinians have had full sovereignty since Israel pulled its military forces and civilians out in 2005, would be expanded into the northern Sinai, thus providing economic and territorial viability to the envisioned Palestinian state... able to establish their capital in the Jerusalem suburb of Abu Dis.
