Amul Thapar: Trump Country's Perfect SCOTUS Choice
Real Clear Politics ^ | July 3, 2018 | Scott Jennings

Amul Thapar: Trump Country's Perfect SCOTUS Choice President Trump — already a conservative hero for appointing Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court and for his swift remaking of the federal appellate courts — can again make history by choosing Judge Amul Thapar of Kentucky to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Thapar, the son of Indian immigrants who came to America legally, is the product of public schools in Toledo, Ohio. He was the first ever judge of South Asian descent appointed to the federal bench and would be the first person of any Asian heritage appointed to the Supreme Court. Thapar is a history-making choice for a president who loves to make history. Trump often zigs when other presidents would have zagged, as the Washington Post noted this weekend, and he can again defy “the swamp” by appointing someone like Thapar who is squarely from outside of it. For conservatives, Thapar is a dream choice. He’s an originalist, a term associated with Justices Clarence Thomas, Gorsuch and the late Antonin Scalia. Imagine a Supreme Court where the two leading conservative originalists are an African-American and an Indian-American. Trump can absolutely shatter the stereotypes liberals throw at Republicans by having Thapar join Thomas to defend and indeed crusade for the U.S. Constitution.

Who gives a clinton if he’s the first person of Asian heritage? I want people chosen on their merits, on the accomplishments and hard work that are a result of their own choices.

I see absolutely no point in choosing someone because of his genetic makeup. That is the sort of garbage the Bolshies love to follow.

I think you’re a little behind the times with your top pick. The leftist obsession with gays has mostly passed by it seems to me; trans is the in-thing now, along with illegals. White male gays would especially be much further down your list at the moment, probably just above women and atheists. They are part of the evil white patriarchy too to many leftists and subject to affirmative action biases.

I haven’t heard the left focusing much on Native Americans or non-Hispanic illegals lately, while they always defend Muslims (however radical) against the supposed Islamophobes of Trump America, so I’d put Muslims higher too.

Overall, though, it looks like a pretty accurate list to me. Dividing people into little groups that they treat differently from one another is the number one passtime of the modern left.

I think he “is” the best person. The rest is icing. How can you be sure about anyone? Each candidate has something positive and negative, but on the balance Thapar seems the most conservative.

You could very well be right. If he’s the best candidate, he should be the choice. All I’m saying is that no one should be chosen because someone’s under the illusion we’d get “points” by having someone with a certain skin color, nationality or sex.

I want a clear public commitment that he will stop abortion on demand!! I don’t see that.

And you aren't going to from ANY candidate that gets nominated.
And even if someone did, roe vs wade would have to somehow make it onto the SCOTUS docket to be dealt with.

Agreed, would be a good pick. I’d probably still lean towards Amy Barrett and hope Trump gets another pick soon thereafter!

Trump could of course pick a woman to replace Ginsburg, but that wouldn’t do much. Women on the Court aren’t really considered anything special nowadays. I doubt it would help us much with women voters. A woman should be chosen just if she’s a great, conservative, Originalist, young pick, that is to say by the same criteria as a man, so that could be anytime.

The first Asian-American on the Court, though, would be a breakthrough and might actually hurt the Democrats with one of their constituent groups when they go crazy attacking him. A lot of minorities just see another white woman as just another white; we might win a few votes with the insanity that will come from the Dems if Thapar replaces Ginsburg and at least we’ll already have our counter-attack ready (i.e., the Dems are engaging in anti-Asian, anti-Indian bias...they aren’t pro-minority, just pro-leftist, etc.).

Of course, the Dems would attack him now and that might help, but I still think this pick will be a lot easier to get through without absolute insanity from the left than Ginsburg’s, so strategically speaking I still think Thapar needs to be saved for when a leftist goes (Breyer would be OK if he somehow goes before Ginsburg).

Apparently a good buddy of McConnell?

Some of these rulings seem like they’d invite some backlash from the Dems:

But boy, do I ever want another Thomas/Scalia on the SC.

I agree with your excellent analysis. Unless the woman is exceptional, I’d go with Thapar.

It is obvious that President Trump has a deep bench from which to pick a great justice.

Too bad there is currently only one vacancy.

Here’s hoping for several more.

finding any real info on these candidates is like searching for hen’s teeth. his endorsements from McConnell and Nikki Haley is enough to make me very nervous about this one . education at Berkley is a major negative too. I think most any of the others are probabaly safer.

I think a mitt Romney settled that one. Mike will stay in the senate and remain as the Senior Senator from Utah. Mitt will be the Junior Senator from Utah *evil grin*
