The upcoming NATO summit starts July 11, and before he leaves for Brussels, President Trump plans on announcing his pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Democrats worry that Trump's nominee will scale back reproductive rights, while Republicans are hoping to fast track the confirmation process, with hearings in mid-August and a full Senate vote ahead of the November midterm elections. The GOP is in control of only 51 of the Senate's seats, and the White House announced late Thursday that Trump spent the evening meeting with three Democratic senators from red states who voted to confirm Justice Neil Gorsuch Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
They were joined by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Collins and Murkowski have stated they agree with Roe v Wade, and Collins on Thursday gave some insight into the type of person she would like to replace Kennedy. "I do not apply ideological litmus tests to nominees, but I want to see integrity, intellect, a respect for precedent, and an adherence to the rule of law," she said. In her view, Kennedy was an "ideal justice."

If president Trump gets reelected, he’ll almost certainly replace Ginsburg (85 years old) and Breyer (79 years old).
Maybe Justice Thomas would retire in 2020 to give Trump a chance to replace him, as well. He’ll be about 75 years old. Alito is not far behind him in age.
If it all played out like this, we could get this country back to where it was before Roe vs. Wade, or better.
Honestly, I could imagine a 7-2 majority, especially if Pence wins after two Trump terms.
I hope he ads Putin to his “short list”...just for a laugh.
FWIW: Amy Coney Barrett (born 1972)
“If president Trump gets reelected, hell almost certainly replace Ginsburg (85 years old) and Breyer (79 years old).”
How long do these people think they are going to live? You would think that they would want to retire and enjoy life for awhile before they give up the ghost.
As is often said: “Nobody wishes they spent more time with their business when they lay on their death bed.”.
Larsen 3 years older than Barrett and also just got put on the circuit court, so she has Barrett’s problem, namely not much experience on the circuit level. Plus, she brings no D senator who might vote for her as Barrett does.
Her choice does not resonate with a “swing” state (I think she is from Louisiana) The Justices from Wisconsin or Michigan (Sykes and Larson) are solid conservatives and might draw support from libs to confirm and then perhaps vote in the upcoming elections for Trump candidates.
Hahahahahaha
...and Utah gives us another RomneyCare senator?
No thanks, Levin!
Diane Sykes is 60...not that there’s anything wrong with that.
But for a lasting impact, a strong conservative in their mid-40s would be optimal.
Neither can I and I don’t like that at all.
Because these justices are all so politically driven, they they to retire at the last opportunity to be replaced by someone from the party that nominated them. I’m sure there are a few exceptions.
Some will die in office, simply because they wrongfully think they can live until the aforementioned opportunity presents itself.
He should do it on the 4th, with fireworks going off behind him.
BULL - Levin doesn’t hate Trump. But I wouldn’t back Lee. There are others more qualified.
FUML, we don’t care what you think.
Thomas Hardiman. Next question.
“But Lee would be good,...”
Oh oh. Prepare to be boarded. Water boarded, that is.
I saw a funny post yesterday on the FB site. Someone posted a tweet from a snowflake princess in which she complained that she was upset because “Trump” was going to take away her “democracy” and then she wouldn’t be able to have an abortion. It sounded like her mind IS already an abortion.
I don’t know about Lee. Maybe he’s mended fences with Trump. As for Barrett, I like her, but several postings here say she would be Borked.
I think she would be a great pick. Lee would be too.
If he’s picked, does he get to vote for himself?
I have to respectfully disagree with that assessment.
During the 2016 primaries Levin was a vocal Cruz supporter (like many conservatives at the time) and frequently voiced his concerns about Trump's bona fides.
He did make it clear he was voting Trump in the general election (not a difficult decision), and since DJT's inauguration Levin has expressed not only his surprise but his admiration for Trump's actions since taking office.
Levin still has a few disagreements with Trump policy, most notably trade and tariffs.
He addressed that this week on his radio show, and this is pretty much a direct quote: "I love the guy, but he's wrong on this."
Not a lot of hate in that statement.
I think Borking Barrett would be good TV. I don’t think it would work. She’s a mom of 7. I think you have to factor the Borking factor in, and what that will look like...and I think shes does well in that context.
Unless Lee resigns from the Senate, he gets to vote, right? (If that’s wrong....you are right....the math gets tight)
