The leaders of the Baltic states and Poland will sign a long-awaited deal on Thursday to connect their power grids to the European Union grid by 2025 and break their energy relationship with Russia, a Soviet legacy.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, once ruled by Moscow, view being plugged into Russia's power network as a threat to their national security.
"We worked nine years for the agreement," President Dalia Grybauskaite told Lithuanian LRT television on Thursday.
"This is the last millstone tied to our feet, keeping us from real energy independence," she said. "That tool of blackmail, which was used (by Russia) to buy our politicians and meddle in our politics, will no longer exist."

They would be better off linking to neither Russia nor the EU.
The imported power from the west is most likely multiples more expensive than from Russia.
Why can’t they build their own power plants and export power?
Or linking to both and playing the two off against each other, while developing true energy independence.
And the EU isn't?
Yes, you’ve got a point there.
The E. U. is a train wreck in slow motion.
No use tying your fate to it.
Right...better off with their own grid.
” playing the two off against each other,”
Seems like the right thing to do.
Negotiations 101.
Not even “Art of the Deal” stuff.
Thought they would be 55 hertz (old Russian standard) , and the Euro countries use 50 Hz AC. Near impossible to change or rerate all of the original motors and controllers. The difference between 50 and 55 is not as great as 50 and 60 hz. Volts?
They have few energy supplies in country though. Grid independence is hard enough, But you need raw energy supplies too.
Meet the new boss,
Same as the old boss.
Probably worse...
Russia hasn’t ordered them to accept hordes of invading muslim terrorist “immigrants”.
Nope, I’m wrong. 230 volt service, 50 hz. Like Poland and the rest.
Russia uses 50 HHz. It is not synchronized with the EU. That make interconnection difficult.
If they are plugged into the EU they can expect a flow of muzzies.
best to try to become as independent as possible, or at least to diversify their dependencies ...
it is difficult and nobody is 100 percent independent ...
but it is a very worthwhile goal...
particularly for little countries located right between two competitive very large and powerful nations like Germany (EU) and Russia
tough situation....but they should try to develop as much local power supply as reasonably attainable
imho
Never forced them to celebrate homosexuality either...poor stupid Balts
There are ways to link to both grids, but it does cost some money.
But given the dynamics of where they are, they really should consider linking to both. At this moment in history those countries have more in common with Russia than the EU, in that they don’t want their countries overrun, and overtaken, by Third World savages. Obviously the history is something entirely different, but it does mean that no one knows the future and those countries very well may get kicked out of the EU, or even worse, the horrific civil wars that the EU is setting themselves up for may make Russia more attractive, or even worse, once those wars are over and the EU transitions to Islam, I doubt they’ll be able to rely on them for power.
Russia might own your energy supply.....But the EU will own YOU!.
