On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the nation's highest court. President Donald Trump promised to speedily replace him, and that he would choose someone on the list of 25 candidates he developed to fill the seat vacated by Justice Antonin Scalia. Trump should pick Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah).
I have been a big fan of Lee for a long time. A former Supreme Court law clerk, this senator has taken firm principled stances and presented a strong originalist view of the Constitution. He made Trump's second list, the current one under consideration.
Lee took himself out of the running in September 2016, as he was running for his U.S. Senate seat that year. On Wednesday, he changed his tune. "If somebody asked me if I would consider that, I would not say no," the senator said.
"Mike Lee spoke to reporters in a rare hallway interview about SCOTUS. Asked if he would ever be interested in being considered, he noted he has been a court watcher his whole life, used to watch arguments for fun as a kid. "I would not say no." He added it is Trump's decision."

If confirmed, he would be the first sitting senator named to the Supreme Court since Hugo Black in 1937.
Sen. Ted Cruz , the other former Supreme Court law clerk in the U.S. Senate, threw his support behind Lee Wednesday. "I think the single best choice that President Trump could make to fill this vacancy is Mike Lee," Cruz told Fox News. "The reason why I think he is best choice that President Trump could make is because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mike Lee would be faithful to the Constitution and Bill of Rights."

Dear Mike Lee, you are a mormon. Go away. Thanks.
No, not a senator.
We could all be spared the visit to each Senator’s office get acquainted, since he already knows everyone...
Wasn’t Lee caught up in scandal a year or so ago, then disappeared from public. I seriously doubt he could pass scrutiny. Besides, the last thing we need is a politician on the supreme court. Give us a credible jurist.
He cant. We cant spare the vote. With McCain withholding representation for the people of Arizona we can not spare a single vote.
Lee is an Originalist and has impeccablet credentials, sure. But there’s another reason to appoint him, provided that he is one of the top-ranking candidates: he’s a Mormon. Appoinging Mike Lee would neutralize any opposition from Jeff Flake.
Never give up a solid Senate seat. There are 24 other choices.
...and Lyn’ Ted’s endorsement is kiss of death.
Cruz claimed today that he got Lee on Trump’s list in a deal with Trump for Cruz’ support in the 2016 election.
Inappropriate comment IMHO. In any case, I believe Mike Lee would make a GREAT Supreme Court Justice.
RE: ...and Lyn Teds endorsement is kiss of death.
Why is that?
You beat me to it! HIs church wants open borders.
RE: Dear Mike Lee, you are a mormon. Go away. Thanks.
Are you saying Mormons can’t uphold the constitution? Why is that?
Wasn’t he one of those anti-Trump sleazeballs at the convention? If so, F him.
You beat me to it! HIs church wants open borders.
Why risk taking a popular Senator out, and having a special election to replace him, when there are so many other choices.
As the prime example of that mistake, I give you Jeff Sessions. Trump should not do that again (and, no, I don’t think that Mike Lee would be a do-nothing like Sessions, but the point still remains to NOT make that mistake again).

Senator Mike Lee’s name is being tossed around for SCOTUS.
In October, 2016 - when it mattered most - Lee had the following message for Trump.

And we get another Romney in his place?
No, thank you!
I’m really just not interested anyway. Better options elsewhere on Trump’s list.
He could be an option if at some point down the road there is a problem with the Senate confirming Trump’s choice—the club is loath to vote against its own members. But not needed now, so shouldn’t be used up now.
