On Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the nation's highest court. President Donald Trump promised to speedily replace him, and that he would choose someone on the list of 25 candidates he developed to fill the seat vacated by Justice Antonin Scalia. Trump should pick Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah).
I have been a big fan of Lee for a long time. A former Supreme Court law clerk, this senator has taken firm principled stances and presented a strong originalist view of the Constitution. He made Trump's second list, the current one under consideration.
Lee took himself out of the running in September 2016, as he was running for his U.S. Senate seat that year. On Wednesday, he changed his tune. "If somebody asked me if I would consider that, I would not say no," the senator said.
"Mike Lee spoke to reporters in a rare hallway interview about SCOTUS. Asked if he would ever be interested in being considered, he noted he has been a court watcher his whole life, used to watch arguments for fun as a kid. "I would not say no." He added it is Trump's decision."

If confirmed, he would be the first sitting senator named to the Supreme Court since Hugo Black in 1937.
Sen. Ted Cruz , the other former Supreme Court law clerk in the U.S. Senate, threw his support behind Lee Wednesday. "I think the single best choice that President Trump could make to fill this vacancy is Mike Lee," Cruz told Fox News. "The reason why I think he is best choice that President Trump could make is because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mike Lee would be faithful to the Constitution and Bill of Rights."

He cant. We cant spare the vote. With McCain withholding representation for the people of Arizona we can not spare a single vote.
If Lee resigned would not the governor of Utah immediately name a new senator that could vote to confirm?
RE: You beat me to it! HIs church wants open borders.

To make a long story short — You don’t have to agree with EVERYTHING your church elders want. Just like not every catholic agrees with the Pope on immigration.
Wasnt Lee caught up in scandal a year or so ago, then disappeared from public. I seriously doubt he could pass scrutiny. Besides, the last thing we need is a politician on the supreme court. Give us a credible jurist.
As to him being appointed a Supreme Court Justice. Just NO, I mean NO!
Lee would be a great choice. He would have to resign his Senate seat, allow the Utah governor to appoint a new Republican, and go from there.
I think it would be hard for sitting Senators to essentially vote against a member. Lee would be outstanding as a conservative jurist, of that I have no doubt.
Trump should put a woman on the court...and a man when Ginsberg dies..she will never retire now..all the women are libs..
Frankly as long as the nominee is in the mold of a Scalia I want the youngest one possible.
Nope.
No, thanks.
Not ever.
Can you elaborate why?
“To make a long story short You dont have to agree with EVERYTHING your church elders want. Just like not every catholic agrees with the Pope on immigration.”
NONSENSE! I am a non-practicing Elder in the Mormon Church. And Yes you do have to agree with the policies of the Mormon Church if you expect to be a member in good standing, which I am not! You can be a Christmas and Easter Catholic, you cannot be a Christmas and Easter Mormon! I would not trust Mike Lee to follow the Constitution and the Laws of this Country if they somehow interfere with Mormon doctrine or Church policy. He’s a fine Senator, leave him there.
I was a big backer of Lee til I saw his hissy fit on the floor of the Republican convention. I felt it was childish.
No. No. No.
There are plenty of appellate court judges with known records.
Mike Lee and his Utah Supreme Court brother are Harry Reid stooges.
It could be a problem. If he’s nominated, that changes the score in the Senate to 50-49, and with democrats john mccain, susan collins and jeff flake, it really becomes 47-52 in democrat party’s favor.
Mccain no longer has to pretend to be a conservative since he’s not facing any more elections so he can shed his camouflage, and flake is still auditioning for a gig on MSNBC, and collins...well, she’s just hopeless.
RE: Mike Lee and his Utah Supreme Court brother are Harry Reid stooges.
Where in his voting and Senate records has he been shown to be a Harry Reid stooge?
RE: No. No. No.
Could you kindly explain why?
No. The author is crazy.
YEP he is/was a NEVER TRUMPER. There are video’s of his judgement in this matter and they are POOR. I wouldn’t want him making SC judgements.
No open borders shills on the court.
Next candidate.
You might have put an extra "m" in one of those words. :)
