In my own case, my surname is not uncommon in the United States, but it is uncommon in Europe (there were no standard spellings in the 17th/18th Century), the story is part of my family lore, and there is a touch of Native American in my DNA. So I buy into the story.
I look more like George Custer than Sitting Bull, but I still think it's pretty cool, and it's 100% American. And it's pretty common.

On my father’s side, the first of his lineage that came to the U.S. was in the 1840s, landing in New Orleans and staying there. I’ve done extensive genealogical research, and there was no Indian or trace of Indian EVER in our mix. On my mother’s side, SHE was the first of her family to come to the U.S., and no one in HER lineage ever came here before she did. For good or ill, we are as white as white can be (blonde and hazel-eyed).
