Why do we need more people in this country, anyway?
The Washington Post ^ | June 21, 2018 | Michael Anton

Posted on 06/22/2018 4:35:27 PM PDT by Bratch

As Capitol Hill Republicans attempt for — what, the eighth? ninth? — time in the past two decades to jam through an amnesty that their voters have explicitly, loudly and repeatedly said they do not want, it’s worth asking a question that is rarely raised:

To most ears, the question sounds blasphemous, which illustrates the rottenness of our immigration debate. Actually, “debate” is far too generous. One side has made sure that there is no debate. Good people want more immigration, and bad people object or raise questions. An inherently political issue has been effectively rendered religious, with the righteous on one side, sinners on the other.

The basic question remains. The pat answer over the past 20 years — “to do the jobs Americans just won’t do” — may seem to have some salience with a 3.9 percent unemployment rate. But that only further raises the question. After at least two decades of wage stagnation and even decline, now that we’ve finally reached the nirvana of full employment (and who knows how long it will last), why not take advantage of this tight labor market to raise wages across the board? Especially for the working and middle classes that got nowhere or even lost ground during the housing, finance and tech booms of recent years?

Just about everyone knows the answer: because the business community does not like tight labor markets and the concomitant necessity to raise wages. That’s bad for the bottom line. The solution? More workers! And so the Chamber of Commerce annex — a.k.a. Capitol Hill Republicans — dutifully attempt to do their donors’ bidding at the expense of their voters’ interests.

That’s about what I was planning to write.

And Social Security is not the only Ponzi Scheme that the government is operating.

“The dems need more voters because their base is not reproducing due to PC, BC, and abortion.”

So everybody shut the F up about abortion already!

The other dirty little secret is that companies DON”T CARE where these people get their $$ from. As long as they spend it. Companies are just fine if Government gives them their $$ — as long as they reap the profits without getting stuck with the tax bill.

Thanks for posting. I have been advocating a population limit in the USA for a long time.

Do we really need more people to create more urban congestion?

Are we being too generous with our welfare programs so the millions who could work, but are not because the welfare programs pay more than a wage? If wages rose and welfare benefits declined, those sluggards would need to get off their LazyBoy rocker and go to work.

How many schools are the taxpayers building to educate foreign illegals? I am not convinced the USA taxpayer is morally responsible to educate people’s kids from other countries.

“Why do we need more people in this country, anyway?”

Because...

1. The total fertility rate in the United States estimated for 2016 is 1.82 children per woman,[8][9] which is below the replacement fertility rate of approximately 2.1.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_the_United_States

If we don’t import people, the country will shrink. It’s happening to Japan at an alarming rate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_Japan

Japan is destined to go away. Europe is in similar shape, except for their recent invasion. Their countries won’t go away, only their cultures.

2. The only ways to grow the economy are to increase the number of people producing or to increase the individual efficiency. Technology helps a lot, but our GDP has been in the tank for a while (seems to be improving lately due to Trump’s tax changes and policies - yay!)

If the economy doesn’t grow we have no chance to repay our debts. Debt is steadily increasing. Remember, we gave the teens in congress the keys to the car and our credit card, and they’re still drunk.

3. We really do have a shortage of educated engineers, software developers, scientists. When we educate a foreign student, and they do well, we should try to keep them here. Let’s keep out the folks that mow the lawn; that’s a great way to teach kids responsibility. Have a look at Australia’s immigration laws for a good example.

Ok, donning the flameproof suit... ;)

F them all. There were 140 million in the country when I was born. Stop inflow of more and start sending them back from whence they came except for useful, productive humans. Enough of this Obama/Bush bull crap.

Have you ever visited Japan? You may want to see what a non-population growth country looks like.

"Have you ever visited Japan? You may want to see what a non-population growth country looks like."

I haven't and I'd love to! On by bucket list.

Note - they are a far cry from "non-population growth." They're shrinking at an alarming rate.

The current population of the US is 328 million. We have a net gain of one person every 13 seconds. The US is the third most populous nation on earth behind China and India. Indonesia is fourth with 263 million followed by Brazil with 209 million. Sixth is Pakistan, followed by Nigeria and Bangladesh.

"Does the United States — population 320 million and rising — need more people?" No. Our roads are crowded, schools are crowded, prisons are crowded, and welfare systems are overloaded. There should be a minimum 5 year ban on any new immigration (exceptions, perhaps, for a few top scientists). Also, in addition to deporting all illegals, we should deport legal noncitizens (Somalis, jihadists, welfare cases, etc.) who are not needed here. We have been taken advantage of for 50 years when it comes to immigration. We have to turn it around.

“Overpopulation!”, say liberals when advocating for abortion.

“Abundant resources to share with the world!”, say liberals when advocating for open borders.

Liberals need to address the incongruity.

Note - they are a far cry from "non-population growth." They're shrinking at an alarming rate.

Why is it "alarming?" Japan is the 10th largest country in the world with 126 million.

Japan's fertility rate is 1.41 compared to Germany's 1.45 and China's 1.60. All are below the replacement rate of 2.1. South Korea is even lower with 1.26 and Taiwan with 1.13 and Singapore with .83. The US has a 1.87 rate.

The nine highest fertility rates are countries in Africa with Niger having the highest with 6.49.

Like 3 decades. Why do "they" think that a vast majority of science and engineering students are foreigners? The real rewards are for the middle-men skimming off the ooze from the swamp in DC.
