Vanity: What to do when vital records cannot find a birth certificate.

Posted on 06/20/2018 4:53:54 AM PDT by gattaca

Should a family lawyer be contacted? The person is 38 years old, has a SS card, driver's license, etc. Vital records just can't locate his birth certificate.

Go to the county board of record and ask if they have it.

Do this in person as they find it harder to ignore your sad little face. If they can not find it ask, very politely if they could search the day before and after. If they were born close to midnight the official day they were born may not be the day they were told.

As a last resort they can hire a PI who specializes in finding adopted children their original BC. This is pricey so last resort.

Was he baptized as an infant? Sometimes vital stats will accept a certificate of baptism as proof of birth and use it to generate a replacement. If not find out if they will take an “affidavit of live birth” from his parents and, if still around, the person who delivered him. I am surprised there is no copy with any family member. A certified copy is needed for so much these days.

Oh and tell him to get it in writing that Vital Stats are not able to locate the original to make a certified copy.

It used to drive me bats when people would come to the city where I worked asking for copies of B/C, yes even out of state ones. I don’t know how it works in other states but in Florida the counties and municipalities do not keep copies of birth certificates. A copy can be obtained from a local branch of the State Department of Health as they have computer access to those records. A copy can also be obtained from the Bureau of Vital Statistics. But your run of the mill county or city hall office. No.

Maybe he can use this. “U.S. Department of State, Birth Affidavit.” The form is to be used for applying for a Passport but I imagine the info and outline would be acceptable in other situations when a B/C cannot be found.

I was a county clerk in TX and filed BCs in the county records every day.

Where did they attend school? Most public schools have records of matriculation and many include this info.

That is why I wrote how it was done in Florida. Not all states have the same process.

I guess my point is in order to get a license or SS, or serve in the Armed forces (or get drafted) there has to be a government document that indicates citizenship.

Good news it is hard to not have four forms of government ID.
