"During that expedited process, we can and should keep families together, keep children with their moms and dads and we need to stand up temporary shelters."

The most logical response to the separation issue that I have read is that even our citizen children are separated from their parents when their parents are in jail.
I assume there is still a provision to verify that the kids are indeed children and not props.
Fine - the separations are driven by law and can be fixed by congress. This is an issue that has no upside, i.e, it is not good PR and on the other side does nothing to dissuade illegals.
Build the wall. Enforce hiring laws. Jail employers. Turn off benefits and free tuition.
Round up all the leftists and ship them to Liberia...
