A new copyright law from the European Union would lead to the banning of memes on the internet, campaigners are warning.
The EU Copyright Directive intends to protect the intellectual property rights of people who upload their material to the internet.
However, campaigners are warning the law will require all content uploaded to the internet to be monitored and potentially deleted if a likeness to existing copyright is protected.
The campaign against a particular provision of the directive, Article 13, warns that online platforms would be economically damaged if they were forced to comply with its expensive obligations.
The law would destroy the internet as we know it warn the campaigners, who add it would allow big companies to control what we see and do online.
Essentially, the campaigners are arguing the stringent copyright protections of Article 13 would damage the sharing of parody content and memes which, while themselves being original and creative works, are often developed from other peoples original content.

The EU loves it some tyranny.
Why let fascism take over by force when you can do it through the ballot box?
All the lives lost in WW II for nothing. Fascism and antisemitism are almost where they would be had Hitler and Mussolini won.
That should shut down the left wing media....if applied objectively......
Well, duh............................that's what it is for!...................
You really cant say that until the last chapter in history is written. And we don't keep peace or defeat evil in the world without some cost (usually in blood). There is now and has been for my entire life conflict between good and evil all over the globe. I cant think of a time when you could not find more than a dozen armed conflicts going on at any time. The sacrifices made by the greatest generation in WWII led to the rise of the greatest nation on this planet and inspired the best mankind has had to offer so far. None of us can be complacent about keeping that light lit.
Memes are powerful? Good to know.
Anti-muslim memes will result in the death penalty for the creator.
I'm going to stake a claim on perhaps the best meme going - funny as heck - trigglypuff.
Okay, time for Tuvalu to ramp up its web hosting business. Russia might want to get in on the action, too.
They want to keep Alinsky’s rule #5 from being applied to them. “”Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.””
LMAO! Thanks for that, best meme I’ve ever ripped off!
I literally HATE the word ‘meme.’ It was made up by an atheist in 1967.
I think I fell afoul of this recently. I had moved images from Photobucket to postimages. A couple of days ago I got banned for terms of use violation. Their site is screwed up and the Contact Us link doesn’t work so I haven’t been able to get an explanation. I’m pretty sure no images were copyrighted so I’m assuming PC squeamishness is the reason.
Hahaha, I love it!!! The trigglypuff meme is hilarious. I guess you do own it. :D
Memes are like political cartoon templates, whose message can transcend language and cultural barriers + rapidly evolve to keep the message they convey fresh and effective.
They are just as powerful as the days of Thomas Nast’s political cartoons v. Boss Tweed, who said that they were he biggest headache because even though his machine depended on illiterate immigrants in the slums of NYC, they all can look at Nast’s drawings and immediately understand the message.
Now with the Internet, we are not beholden to some smarmy-assed editor.
And, ya don't have to go to art school to do editorial cartoons.
What a great freaking time to be alive!
