A highly publicized extramarital affair didnt end Mark Sanfords political career. Nor did the revelation, less than a month before a 2013 special election for Congress, that he had to go to court because his ex-wife had accused him of trespassing. The National Republican Congressional Committees decision to cut off funding to him that year was also not a fatal blow. He won his next elections.
Then came Donald Trump.
Sanford has been one of the presidents most vocal Republican critics in Congress, and Republican primary voters punished him for it. Sanford lost Tuesday night to Katie Arrington, a state representative who made public support for Trump and Sanfords lack thereof a central issue of her campaign.
"I've always been a realist, and at this point, based on the numbers I see, I think that I'll end up losing this election," Sanford said at his election night party, a little over an hour before the AP called the race.

In an ironic way these folks could be deemed conservatives, in that they are standing up for the old way. An old way that is passing away because it was a weak shadow at best of the new way.
Problem was, conservatives never conserved anything. They lost the culture wars & served up the Bush family.
As if a legacy imbecile like Jeb was going to do anything of value. Watching Trump gut Jeb was a pleasure.
Well it was a kind of good-ole-boy culture that was conserved. It’s the same way in which Jim Crow was a “conservative” stance. It was wrongheaded and was going to court a nasty, testy backlash in its wake, but by george we been doin’ it since grampa was knee high to a peanut.
I can't decide if I want to do "evil chuckle" or "happy sigh."
Washington (CNN)
Less than three hours before South Carolina’s primary polls close, President Donald Trump urged Republican voters there to oust Rep. Mark Sanford — who has criticized him — in favor of his more supportive challenger, state Rep. Katie Arrington.
Trump in a tweet referenced the 2009 scandal in which Sanford, then the governor, disappeared for several days.
He first claimed he’d been “hiking the Appalachian Trail” but later admitted to an extramarital affair in Argentina.
Trump tweeted: “Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble.
He is better off in Argentina. I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!”
Trump’s tweet came at 4:12 p.m. ET. Polls in South Carolina close at 7 p.m. ET.
Excellent news.
Kattie Arrington got just over 50% avoiding a runoff ala what happened in Mississippi, the 3rd candidate was a “purple” democrat openly calling for democrats to vote in the GOP primary. Luckily he spent zero dollars and got low single digits.
While clearly disabused of the notion he was POTUS material, I was supportive of Sanford’s congressional comeback, I couldn’t care less about him cheating on his wife (he can join the club), outside of potential general election vulnerability it engendered (that he weathered when he defeated Stephen Colbert’s sister who was supported by a couple psychotic freepers).
But his hardcore never Trump idiocy combined with his joining the global warming crowd made it clear it was time for him to take a permanent hike. Maybe he and Jeff Flake can go climb Mount Everest.
After his prior good service it is a pity he ended up like this. The Morning Joe effect?
He got old and his tiny little brain settled to his junk and took him for a hike in South America. Now its good riddance. He got what he wanted. He wasnt very contrite or apologetic from what I saw. More of an in your face act.
He was a fake Republican from day one on. At this point, he can retire.
He’s a poster boy for term limits.
Sometimes I find you quit clever. ;>)
oops...I meant quite not quit.
Evil chuckle for sheer pleasure and then the happy sigh to signal contentment.
Good, we need more Never Trumpers put out of office. Hope others take note before crossing Trump.
He spent too much time in the DC Swamp; he caught a nasty parasite that destroyed him.
He sorta went full Bob Inglis. Inglis was fine in his first go-around and up to his unsuccessful run against Sen. Fritz Hollings. But he came back and went nutter. Had he defeated Hollings, we’d have had TWO Linda Graham RINOs. Curiously, just like Sanford running for his 7th non-consecutive term, he lost renomination in 2010 to Trey Gowdy. Gowdy, of course, also seemed promising, but has sadly turned useless tool for the establishment and an apologist for the profoundly corrupt FBI. This was the guy who was gonna bring down Zero and Hillary and did abso-f’ing-lutely nothing. Thankfully, he’s gone, too, come January.
It’s a shame SC has produced such disappointments. Arrington I don’t have high hopes for. She appeared only marginally better than Sanford, and could easily become another Establishment type. If she isn’t, that’ll be a pleasant surprise.
President Trump's evisceration of Jeb was as satisfying as his steamroller over Hillary. If President Trump had not entered the race Jeb probably would have won and then would have been hammered by Clinton.
When Mark Sanford blamed President Trump’s rhetoric for the well planned shooting of Steve Scalise and other Republican baseball players I knew all was not well with Sanford. The shooter was a rabid Democrat Bernie supporter.
Mark Sanford is not a stupid man but hate can blind.
You think Grahamnesty is in trouble? If Sanford could find a way to lose THIS district with his mouth, can’t imagine the rest of South Carolinians would be any different.
Get on the steamroller or under it.
