Keep calm and carry on. In the wake of a disastrous G7 summit where US president Donald Trump all but broke off the Western alliance, the EU should stay cool and prepare to take over global leadership.
That is the message on Monday (11 June) by a former member of the EU leaders club, Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
The US is leaving a vacuum. And who should step in? For me, it is completely obvious, it is Europes time to step in, the former Danish prime minister said at an event in Brussels. Thats where our new next opportunity is, she said, describing Trumps course as a most massive wake-up call.
Thorning-Schmidt, who was presenting a report on What Europe can do to regain initiative, insisted that the EU should have a bigger engagement in the Middle East, and recommit to the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal.
She also argued that the EU should take the leadership that we would get from nowhere else in regulating the information society.

I guess when we withhold the allowance until we get some work out of these EU’ers they throw a temper tantrum.
The USSR constitution was designed to empower the government, especially with the caveats that specified “in the interests of the working people”, and no “negative liberties” that the government could never take away from you (all rights were “positive” rights that could be taken away at any time for any reason).
The EU’s constitution and Charter of Fundamental Rights are formatted exactly the same way.
FDR started us down that road with the “Four Freedoms”:
1. Freedom of speech
2. Freedom of worship
3. Freedom from want
4. Freedom from fear
1 and 2 were fine, but “Freedom from....” is the road to Hell.
They made sure everyone had access to it at all times, even in the Gulag!
The second one is a bastardization of what the First Amendment actually says (to wit “free exercise thereof” of religion); communist constitutions guarantee “freedom of worship” but as a “positive” right with no guarantee of the government not abridging it.
