Former US attorney says Manafort will likely go to prison Friday

Former U.S. attorney Harry Litman said he expects President Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, to be sent to federal prison by the end of the week.

“Prosecutors hate this, judges hate this and he’s going to have to bring his toothbrush to court on Friday because the statute says, if they find this happened, there’s a presumption that no circumstances exist that will get him safely there for trial,” Litman said Tuesday on MSNBC.

“So there’s the real prospect that he now goes to jail, never to leave even until the end of his sentence.”

Litman's comments follow days after special counsel Robert Mueller said in a court filing that Manafort attempted to tamper with potential witnesses while on pretrial release. Mueller on Monday asked the court to revoke or revise his release conditions in the wake of the court filing.

Litman, who now lectures at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law, condemned Manafort's alleged actions on Tuesday.

"…[T]his is the stupidest thing that a defendant can do, this sort of witness tampering,” he told MSNBC. “He’s looking at being in prison, which is a very sort of focusing event, by Friday,” Litman continued.

And yet, Hillary, Obama and their ilk are still walking free.

What is it that Manafort did? I’ve lost track. It was something to do with something that happened a lot of years ago when he was working for Putin? Did he doublecross Putin and that is what got him in the Mueller crosshairs? It’s all so confusing. Who recommended Manafort for the Trump campaign?

For daring to speak with people who Mueller wanted to call as witnesses. This is shocking.

More than free, Hillary, Obama and their ilk are laughing like hyenas. They all get a free pass while Mueller is systematically destroying the lives of Trump supporters. Right about now Hillary is raising a toast and saying, “Hey, maybe I won after all.”

Manafort helped Trump win. That is his crime.

Did he? He only worked for the campaign briefly. He seems irrelevant.

Manafort was only brought in after the primaries were over to manage the delegate process in advance of the convention in order to block the GOPe from mounting a floor fight.

Once the convention was over, Manafort was dismissed and Bannon and Conway took over.

There isn't much of a window for Manafort to collude with Russians. Why would the Russians want to risk exposure by meddling with a GOP-only delegate fight that was a long-shot Hail Mary at best for the disgruntled GOPe?

I’m not sure he even knew they were to be witnesses at the time. They’re long-time business associates, so it’s not surprising he’d call them.

Just read an article by a Never Trumper that there is no substance to the tampering charge. They are playing dirty to get him to flip.

At this point he is an object lesson to potential witnesses against Trump that you had better play ball with Mueller or else you go to jail.

Mueller is trying to provoke: 1) Manafort into turning on Trump; and/or 2) Trump to pardon Manafort.

He’s not even being charged with that (which is a non-existent offense anyway), but with trying to contact a “witness” (I think it was before he even knew the person was a witness, judging by the dates).

In other words, like all the other things, it’s a “process crime,” which is now used by the FBI and the DOJ to get somebody on something just so they can say they did.

I’m no fan of Manafort, but this is ridiculous. As you point out, he was hired for a specific job with no relationship to Russia, foreign policy or anything outside of party politics, but they’re determined to destroy anybody who had anything to do with Trump.

Cruz and his campaign manager, super-cheat Jeff Roe, had a plan to steal delegates right up until and during the convention. Trump hired Manafort to minimize the success of that plan. So in a very real, practical sense, you can thank Cruz and Roe for Manafort’s role in Trump’s campaign.

They are praying they can ensnare as many people around Trump as possible.

They want it to look like the Campaign and White House were run by the likes of Clinton and Obama associates.

It’s the fall back, “See, they all do it!”, defense.
