The Maryland Flooding Is a Warning
Slate Magazine ^ | May 29, 2018 | By HENRY GRABAR

Climate change is hitting America as rain, and we’re making it worse.

Two years ago, Ellicott City, Maryland, was hit by a debilitating flash flood that turned the town’s historic Main Street into a raging muddy river. Scientists said the July 2016 rainstorm was a once-in-a-thousand-year event.

But on Sunday it happened again: 7 to 9 inches of rain fell in the area, 10 miles west of Baltimore, and another torrent swept cars and trees through town.

It’s a reminder that heavy rain, rather than rising seas, may be the earliest severe consequence of climate change. We’ve prepared for it in the worst way possible.

But climate change isn’t the only reason these disasters aren’t quite natural. Unchecked sprawl has built a concrete funnel around Ellicott City. “All this natural vegetation that would act as sponges is being replaced by concrete and impervious surfaces,” explains Stephen Strader, a professor at Villanova who studies environmental risk.

I know there was a flood prior to now.

The barf alert is/was/should be for the premis that the floods are because of “man made” global warming.

There is more than enough evidence that the global warming hysteria is the only thing that IS man made.

Well, it’s the seat of a very wealthy county. If the old part is still salvageable and they want to save it, maybe they’ll turn their influence to getting good engineers and scientists involved.

The Maryland Flooding Is a Warning

Maybe its a warning from God about Marylanders voting Democrat too often. There is just as much scientific evidence for Him being the cause as there is for Global Warming doing it. He's at least done it before. :)

Maybe they can rebuild up 10 or 15 feet. This was done in Seattle after a devastating fire. Now part of the ground level is a tourist attraction called The Underground. The water from future heavy rains can run down the hill below the inhabited parts of the buildings.

I hope they can do something. It’s a very pretty little city. But two devastating floods in two years is demoralizing and perhaps too much to deal with.

Yeah, because Ellicott City has never had so many big floods before. (Rolling eyes emoticon)

What would these people think after 2 hurricanes in 2 years? Oh wait, that happened in ‘75. Apparently no one remembers this, so most must be foreigners.

tidal basin of a coastal area.

No, it's flooding near the bottom of a valley in a hilly area. Nothing to do with tides.

Last year’s flood and the recent flood came DOWN from the Tiber

Yes, a surprising number of people missed that fact. The creek goes underground and the underground culvert is underdesigned.

There was some real nonsense on local talk radio about the flood. Anyone could look at the video and see the creek charging down the hill many feet higher than the Patapso. But some talk show host said it was because the Patapsco wasn't deep enough and was kept shallow for safety reasons.

The flood, like the one two years ago had nothing whatsoever to do with the Patapsco or dams on that river or the lake

They could very easily route the creek down St Paul (IIRC) or whatever street has the church. The church would lose frontage and some other properties would have to be taken. But trying to put all the water through any sort of larger tunnel would not only be an expensive boondoggle, it will fail again.

“You have to understand that Ellicott City is a mill town. It was built where it is for a reason,” said Andy Miller, a geomorphologist at UMBC. “[It was] to take advantage of the very steep narrow valley for water power.

CO2 forced people to build here two centuries ago.

How are they going to reroute the Tiber? ALL the other streets are at significant higher elevations than Main. We’re not talking a couple feet.

And we’ve never had floods before. Psych.

BTW, rain is starting up again right now. Hope this weekend is not too hard on us again.

They would have to replace St. Paul St with a 30 foot deep channel and build bridges for the road at the bottom and the train tracks.

Me too! I don’t mean to suggest an equivalence by any means - I’m about 30 miles South of EC; but the rain seems unending around here!

I remember very rainy months of May, in the past; but this seems to have been one of the worst, and the weather folks keep predicting more rain.

We have had quite the rain all winter and now into alleged summer. Part of the problem...lots of rain that has already saturated.

Personally I will never forget May-June 2003 here. Almost 30 days of continuous rain and drear. Never forget because my nephew made a disco invitation CD for my sister’s birthday party marked June 2003, and the night before it was STILL rainy and she was worried she could not have her outdoor plan. Luckily, it turned out to be the very end of that horrid month and her outdoor party went off OK, albeit we had to use pavement instead of just her back yard.
